Pawn shop nearby sells decently new ones. Chili with beans is my favorite so far, but brisket with gravy and the BBQ pork patty were pretty good too

Saw some infographic thread with a how 2 homemade MRE. Bascially vacuum seal a big bag filled with your favorite long lasting foods. Namely ramen noodles, nuts, cliff bars that sort of thing. I personally pack a few ramens on a hike.

Eurofag, Was on MRE’s for 8 days whilst deployed on a recent exercise somewhere In germany, why my country couldn’t feed us is beyond me, but regardless, it’s not too bad. Vegetable cobbler was a personal favourite, the Maple bun was divine. I can see it getting boring after a while.

Are some MRE’s defective? I opened some to find just the main meals and minimal treats, some never came in the plastic bag, some never came with the heating bag. Is this normal or did they fob off all the shit rations to the non Americans? I’d understand both

They certainly aren’t the best thing in the world but at the same time they’re at the very least edible, especially the menus in use today. Only one I can genuinely say is bad is the vomelet, but I’m pretty sure those aren’t even made anymore.
Me too, IIRC they’re around $37-40 a box though.
MREs are unironically a decent choice for preppers and the like, so long as they have other stuff to balance it out. And I’m pretty sure in the field they are consumed on a regular basis whether it is training or doing some patrol or some shit.
They used to, but for a person constantly on the move they took up too much space and could cause quite a bit of noise rattling around. The MRE of today came from the Long Range Patrol ration of the Vietnam War, where everything was freeze dried and someone would have to heat it up themselves.

Australian MRE's are very good, though I'd probably cut some of the shit out of it and add in a few little things. On the whole they're great and wouldn't hesitate to take them with me on a backcountry hunt

Cans are heavy and bulky. You can “field strip” a bagged mre. Open it, take the food and put it in your pockets/ruck and toss the condiments/cappichino mix/oatmeal cookie

Other than that, Danish MRE's are pretty alright, if you overlook the rye bread so dry and hard you could probably kill someone with it. Vacuum sealed tuna and lime is surprisingly good.

I think like most industrial packaging there would be slight variations on what you get in you MRE bag one reason or another. Especially as it is multipart food item, which means it has different stages where different items are added to the bag. More spots for something to go wrong.

Strange I actually hated that feeling. Also legit chipped a tooth on those turkey nuggets in Bridgeport it was so fucking hard and the cold didn't help.

Honestly the literal austist+ADD combo with visible physical ticks (saw him doing it with a rifle in his hands at the range) who genuinely looked like Gomer Pyle, who repeatedly brought up the subject of shooting everyone else, and was just alround uncooperative and weird dead weight most of the time was worse, but our platoon commander thought he was funny.

Funny story though, one time when we had to defend dug in positions from another platoon, we were also being schooled on barriers, man made, natural, improvised, etc. Said "use your imagination" and the autist says hyenas, causing our platoon commander to laugh and drive off, only to come back with laminated signs with pictures of snarling hyenas on them, and planted them in the terrain. So the other platoon sees them and figures it's probably something they shouldn't ignore, and they get funnelled into an ambush.

A home made MRE can be made on several levels.
- entirely composed on leftover meal elements from military rations.
- composed from civilian camping food available in sports stores.
- composed from normal food stores stuff.
- composed from actually home made stuff like self hunted meat, self picked berries and so on.

The military stuff is great, if you can get hold of it for a reasonable sprice. The camping store stuff is frequently made by the same companies making the military stuff. Can be an expensive way to fill your tummy. Food store stuff is rarely meant for heating with heat bags, nor does it come with the liquid you'll need to prepare it in. Unless it's in a can, in which case weight and volume increases considerably.

I have no low cost option for aquiring military or sports store food, so I am going with the food stores. I bring oatmeal since it can be eaten hot or cold and only need water, I bring tuna cans since they are small, I bring freezedried mashed potatoes and -soup, raisins or other dry fruit, and energy or protein bars. Plus cooking chocolate which will double as energy ration and cocoa drink.

MRE are eaten a lot. In the field, training and so forth. Do a training march eat your MRE and so on. I would lay odds most current or recently discharged probably ate MRE a majority of their service time meals.

I remember the transition between MCI and MRE. I remember joking with a buddy that I could tell the difference between the canned cheeses by weight and I still remember the orange cake fondly. Vets and discussions about rations are common.

There is/was a weird period of time where they were trying different styles of packaging. So one box would have three bags inside the MRE, one box would have one bag inside the MRE, they couldn't decide.

It has to do with required nutrition vs mission requirements. A package of snack bread does not nourish your body as well as chili with beans, but takes up nearly the same amount of space. So if you're going on days long ruck marches, you're going to take all the Entrees and maybe something sugary, but not everything.
