I tried to fine things of worth to steal from Afghanistan but there was literally nothing. All I got out of there was an Afghanistan flag

In old times that was the only why a folders and fighters got paid.

Today war is not fought for territory, its fought for access, contracts and political games.

Assuming that’s true, why should soldiers be the only ones that do not profit from both A. their station and B. their activities? EVERYONE ELSE does in warfare. Warfare fuels the American economy and fills the pockets of people in gov making deals with the private sector, etc.
Your only reason for not letting soldiers take back a measly rifle is that they are the ones doing the dirty work. They actually deserve it.
