They don't need tanks or heavier AFVs, they understand that they're a constabulary force (That is unfortunately controlled by the cartels at the moment) and face no external threats.

They worked fine for the SADF. If they did buy tanks, my guess would be old Leopard C2s or something like that. I can't see any reason for them to buy anything heavier than up-armored 2nd generation MBTs.

The Abrams is a seriously expensive tank to operate, especially in a nation that doesn't have the best fuel logistics to work with. It would serve Mexico better to buy something with good fuel efficiency that can make the most of NATO surplus; ie something with a 105mm gun rather than a 120mm gun.

Why would they want tanks? Theirs is a defensive army that mostly focuses on peacekeeping duties on the side. This means a motorized military that can move their equipment around the country fast and in the matter of a day or two is important, and their purchases reflect that. The ERC-90 is the heaviest vehicle in service, but they have thousands of HMMVs, tacticals, and their own homegrown MRAPs in service. The ERC-90s are never going to face tanks in Mexico and that makes them kings there. They outgun anything in the country. You think this shit could stand up to its 90mm? Not a chance in hell.

Against these, IFV are more than enough as heavy support.
Guatemala has barely 1/8 of Mexico's population and 1/15 of the productivity.
The northern part is a fucking jungle and the southern part is too mountainous for tanks to be of real use during an invasion.
Guatemala wouldn't be able to resist the invasion but would have Vietnam-like conditions to resist occupation, during which MBT would be more a logistical liability rather than an operational asset.
Belize is a non-issue, with less than 1 million people and barely a brigade to defend them.
The USA are, for obvious reason, not even worth trying to defend against : they would steam-roll any conventional military anyway.

Mexico doesn't need tanks. Its southern neighbors are no threat and if there should ever be a conflict with the US Mexico doesn't stand a chance anyway. Instead Mexico should focus on counter-insurgency forces and maybe the coast guard. Something like a GTK Boxer would absolutely suffice for an AFV.
