Next category is propulsion. Is well known that Soviet always have experimented with high power density reactors, but most of Western people thinks only on liquid metal cooled ones. But, USSR was and is on top even with “conventional” pressurised water reactors. Russian ones are smaller, more powerful and faster. And same story is here. Yasen KPM is about same size of Virginia’s S9G, but has 220–230MWt against 150MW. Also its turbines are much more powerfull, acording to my sources from shipyard they are rated on 50MW continuously run. This is over 50% more than Seawolf output. Very interesting thing is, that “bearings” of these turbines are electromagnetic so quiet. My sources claims also, that gearbox are also on electromagnetic principle. If so (mind that this is Russian, they sometimes exaggerate), even transmission will be very quiet. Technology from Alfa, Akula and Sierra, pure nuclear-elektro propulsion stayed and “backup” elektromotors (500kW ech) can drive Yasen to speed up 10 knots. With Yasen passive reactor cooling it is as fast as AIP SSK and also equivalently quiet. As I know Virginia does not have such capability. When battle starts, Yasen is still one of fastest SSN in existence. Thanks to huge power output and excellent Cx is capable to achieve over 35kn (my calculation based on data from my Russian friend put it around 40kn). Its hard to calculate for Virginia, because without realistic model is hard to calculate Cx, but my calculation based on estimation from SeaWolf and Los Angeles class put Virginia somewhere between 32–35kn. Also tactical speed of Yasen is allegedly 28 knots, witch is higher then Seawolf’s 25kn and much higher than Virginia’s 20+ kn.

Many westerns will taunt Yasen for absence of pumpjet, but this is because they lack of technical purpose of that. Pumpjet is very good piece of technology. It increase pressure before propeller so cavitation occurs later (quieter) and also ring prevents lateral water flow, so is also more efficient than propeller itself. But there is also one huge drawback. In pumpjet it is not propeller which is actually drive submarine, but jet of water driven by propeller. And this is problem, because pumpjet is in fact “rocket” engine with final pressure of water stream on output. And with increased environment pressure overall efficiency of pumpjet is greatly decreasing. This is why deep submersible Yasen does not have pump-jet. In depth, Yasen class operates, it will be burden. Much shallower Borei class SSBN pumpjet have.

It’s a good submarine, but like most Russian projects that come close to the US in technical capabilities, they’re 20 years too late, and there’s too few of them to actually affect the outcome of a major conflict. If the Russian economy ever untucks itself, there might be some cause for concern, but that’s a major “if.”
