Say a major war or hell even an insurgency broke out and a first world nation had to go fight over there, what would be the single worst possible place you could send that army that would almost guarantee they'd get seriously fucked just from being there.
What is the worst possible terrain to fight a modern war in?
Other urls found in this thread:
Mountains have been BTFOing people since we became sentient. Don't see that changing really. They're even nuke survivable.
Your moms basement since that seems to be the only place you can't make it out of
I personally wouldn’t want to fight in snow. Jungle sucks in terms of critters and disease. Afghanistan was not an easy place to navigate.
mariana trench
In what way are mountains nuke resistant? If you somehow survive the blast the entire place is still irradiated
Around Lake Vostok would probably be pretty bad, especially in the next few months. Warmest temperature ever measured there is -14°C, the average for winter (April to October) is -65°C, and the cold record is -89.2°C. There's also just about no moisture whatsoever in the air, average winds are 5m/s with bugger all for shelter, and it's nearly 3.5km over sea level so not a lot of oxygen to go around either.
My heart goes out to people working in the mobile research stations, that shit must fucking suck.
Worst in a realistic "West vs China and Russia":
>Russian invasion and winter 2.0
megacities.
>What is the worst possible terrain to fight a modern war in
A dense modern hi-rise urban environment filled with a mix of civilians/insurance/ and conventional forces. Imagine fighting war in downtown NY or LA.
Lunar crater
This.
What are you talking about? That sounds fucking amazing.
This, the survivors would be poisoned by the burning materials in all the buildings.
>insurance
You might survive, but your wallet's doomed.
lunar surface
Fuck Lunarians
depending on the level of radiation, people can still pull a trigger long enough to reproduce
T. Japan
Solar surface
mountains contain the explosion better, and stop radioactive wind better.
Just do it at night.
t. Marine
kekek
>kek
Also equip soldiers with sunglasses and sunblock.
This, imagine the siege of Sarajevo but ten times worse.
Ever go to Sh*t Jow Forums Says to post spiderman memes on their Loli threads.
That my friend, is the worst environment to fight in.
>3 hours of clearing the parking garage
>totally exhausted
>Lungs dry from burning tires
>eyes burning from vaporized aluminium.
>Sitting down on the curb
>Street was cleared and is in artillery shadow
>Sit down for some well earned rest
>enjoying fresh air
>get wrecked by a 60lb leather chair dropped form 40 stories up.
Just burn that shit down. Saving a skyscraper owned by some shit multinational is not worth it.
You don'r want to engage in urban combat without insurgence insurance!
I'd say urban environment, especially in a no shit megacity like New York or Mexico City. Urban terrain greatly favors the defenders and will negate the advantages of armor. If there are civilians the attacker can't use their firepower to clear the city.
That guy with the PKM has seen some shit
Heavily resistant to blast propagation in the event of a ground detonation and airbursts are unlikely due to the resilience of mountain complexes. Prevailing winds would carry fallout up and away rather than distributing it evenly.
Literally impossible. You would need millions of men to even "occupy" Long Island
Swamps. They are the worst. Between Florida style or Alaska style in the summer can be a nightmare for anyone after a few hours. The bugs WILL eat you alive.
Volcanos, imagine fighting in one.
Boreal forest / muskeg.
All the fun of a swamp, a swampy forest, a frozen waste land and a nearly impassable wilderness.
You can't move vehicles overland. You must build road everywhere. It freezes down to -40 in the winter, and has enough flys and mosquitoes the rest of the year to make work outside nearly impossible for humans.
Maybe the worst part is that you can't get through it, or move around it. It's more or less all of Canada and Russia below the line when it's just rocks. You could advance 1000 km and still be stuck in the swamp.
Mountains and valleys. Anywhere where the high ground is crucial but it's extremely easy to lose just SCREAMS "pls ambush me daddy"
>A dense modern hi-rise urban environment filled with a mix of civilians/insurance/ and conventional forces. Imagine fighting war in downtown NY or LA.
CW2.0 when?
African rainforest
> hot
> humid
> full of mud
> far from civilizaton
> mosquitoes of many different species
> wild animal viruses and parasites can fuck you up
>survivors
This is what nukes are for.
>Africa
>far from civilization
Redundant af my nigga
You dumb
Based and sunpilled
This. Anywhere it gets this cold. Where movable metal items start to stick to each other from the temperature. Where exposed skin can end up worse than a bullet wound. Where vehicles fail to start, or liquid lines start to freeze.
What about a megacity in arctic mountains on the surface of the moons sun? How bad would that be?
Just do it at night in the summer on a holiday.
Brilliance
+1 for muskeg.
Only passable in the winter unless you're a moose
And then it's so cold you will lose all of your men to attrition
You'd just burn it, or blow bridges and let the city starve and burn itself.
This
Urban warfare would be an abject clusterfuck
Shit has been hitting the fan in Appalachia since at least 1792.
Anyone who doesn't respect that is liable to be turned into bitch-burgers
>COUNTRY ROOOOADS
Check out rain shadows and consider how that might affect wind and rain borne fallout. I'm not saying it's perfect but its a hell of a lot better than being out on the plains.
Fuck that game for using that song.
Fuck Bob Dylan for using that state.
Mammy used to cry everytime it came on because Great Granpa made her leave her home and move to South America and then New York.
Now I want to cry when I hear it so fuck you for bringing it up.
>Bob Dylan
>You can't move vehicles overland.
Shit. John Denver. I need coffee. Fuck John Denver too tho.
Antarctica because fuck the cold and dark
Who the fuck wants that mound of snow with some penguin sprinkles anyway?
The real shithole would be Siberia since its thawing out so you have swampy bits the cold and having to deal with russian subumans
This. Pick any building in that picture and just think about how long it would take to clear. Then look at the rest of the picture.
That's were combat is supposed to go in the future. Once we reach 9 billion in population and more people live in megacity/regions, the idea of asymmetric warfare, coupled with complex and large structures, will essentially make us live in the cyberpunk world of the 80's.
The question then becomes not which terrain is the worst but how to live in the worst terrain of the high-tech-low-life future?
British Columbian insurgency with the federal government trying to retake control of the province
It would be hell on earth trying to remove insurgents from essentially the Afghanistan of the PNW
Modern nuclear weapons are far more efficient and burn off their fuel much better than they did in the 60s. Fallout isn't nearly as much of a concern and will not fuck you as bad just from being near the explosion. You would still want to get away from ground zero, but getting hit by the wind is not a game over anymore.
Antarctic Dry Valleys:
. No rain for 2 million years = no water.
. Antarctica = no supplies.
. 320 KPH Winds = self explanatory.
. Low of -68 Celcius = hypothermia.
Shits crazy.
bump
Mangroves, it's like a jungle but worse because your stuck in muddy water
fpbp
Hill/Mountain people master race
Rugged mountains with triple canopy full of locals who will smile to your face and shoot you in the back = stay the fuck out unless you just kill everyone.
