I'm so glad that someone recorded these.
I'm sure some "kids" here would remember growing up on base and watching AFN from that era.

AFN always had a public access vibe to it's production values

Wouldn't something like dams inherently be brutalist?

My grandfather who was a CMSgt in the Air Force back during Vietnam told me that they fought just as hard as the Marines did when Viet Cong would harass their airfield and base.
Hell, even some of his pilots and ground crew were able to go outside the wire many times with the security police and Marines.
Wartime is neat in that way.

Thanks, user.

That's what I was thinking.

They pulled the rear tongue flaps of their helmet covers out, normally they are tucked between the shell and liner of the helmet to hold the cover in place.

you'd have to try to make them anything but

Why are there American soldiers in East Germany? Was that immediately post-Berlin wall, and the NVA hadn't been absorbed into the Bundeswehr yet?

Probably before the wall fell. As part of the original post-war arrangement, you could cross between West and East Berlin if you were in service dress (and were authorised, presumably).

It was useful for intelligence gathering. The ops officer at my old Int Corps unit was an NCO based in Berlin during the 80s; he and his colleagues would cross to observe a military parade, for instance, and try to snoop around the shiny new tanks in the staging area looking for things like serial numbers or unit designations (which could be analysed back home and be very informative). If they got caught the tank crews would try to smack them with radio antennae.

The rules were created when all of the occupying nations in Germany were nominally allies. They must have seemed archaic by the 1980s, but it was useful for both sides to be able to send observers and liaison officers across to watch their opponent.

Older than that. It's from the January 1982 issue of National Geographic.

They all look so enthusiastic to be there... Maybe not

So the NVA had a transitional phase in terms of gear during the reunification where they blended their own equipment with BW stuff?
