It depends on how close your nearest purifiable water source is. For me, it's the decent sized creek about 100m away from my house... So like a small nalgene is good enough. It also depends on ambient temperature, physical fitness, level of physical activity planned, etc.

Your standard 3L CamelBak with a life straw or OEM CamelBak filter is probably your best balance between carry weight and not dying.

Really comes down to how much water is in your environment? If the answer is tons, then it is far more important to bring some way to purify water. If the answer is next to none, then every drop of water is important, bring as much as you can carry. For most people, the answer will be somewhere in between.

Probably depends a bit on how good you are at making the water drinkable. The water table is off the charts where I live. I wouldn't drink the well water there at all. Probably has sewage run off and all kinds of problems. You can probably survive off contaminated water for longer than you'll live. If you want better for others then it's not really the kind of thing you can keep up for very long.

Water is one of those things you dont want to run out of. My hiking/bug out bag has a camel pouch but I still have the life straw and some pouches of water like in pic. 16 or so pouches are for storing also in my trunk and 72 hour get home bag also in my trunk.

4 pints / 2-ish liters will get you from one source of water to the next. If you have transport or somewhere you are staying a while, prepare lots more water there.

If you plan to cross 50 miles of desert on foot then yes, carry more water.

Note that there's a huge difference between survival and a military operation. In a military op you are going to be followed by someone with the job and equipment of getting you water. In this case you are also exerting yourself in hot weather with heavy equipment on and need to keep fucking sweating, and you need lots of water to keep an MRE from turning into a literal stone dildo inside your small intestines.

You need to think more in terms of being able to find and purify water. It simply isn’t practical to carry all of the water which you will need.

The water pouches cover a few items. Mostly it is temperature changes. In a car trunk is can easily get over 100 F degrees. In the winter it can be under 0 F degrees. Water bottle materials do not fair well in that environment and will also bleed water. These pouches can survive the extreme temperature without rupturing, bleed out or having materials leech into the water. Also if frozen can be paired up with a hand warmer or natural body heat in a pocket to heat up so the body doesnt have to process ice cold water in 0 F degree temps. Next up, I do have a bottle normally when I leave the house, these are enclosed emergency level water that can be tucked into little spaces in a bag without fear of exploding. At a one time cost it is a valid investment like a military ration for prepping. Of course you dont want your only water supply to be these but you have them available at all times.

3 to 6 liters depending on your climate and a good/fast way to purify more. Carrying anything less means you have a significant time restriction between resupply particularly in hot+humid weather, carrying anything more becomes impractically heavy.

A Sawyer Mini or Sawyer Squeeze is cheap, light, compact, and good for longer than you would be in a SHTF scenario.

Which means your gallon lasts you about 45 minutes, not a full day much less a day and a half, if it's shitty out.
