It was too foggy, too rainy and generally shit weather where you couldnt see shit. But it was still a pretty nice parade with a number of international ships.
Anyway, beginning with the star of the show: The first Type 055 Cruiser, named "Nanchang", pennant 101.
Japanese news were covering this parade, dubbing it as "Asia's largest warship".

Is it normal to involve support ships in fleet reviews like that? I always assumed the point was to show off impressive-looking offensive capabilities more so than logistics infrastructure.

very interesting detail on the main radar arrays.
Seems like they have optimized those bar-shaped radars ontop of the bridge. Previously thought to be IFF interrogators, they are most probably long band radars-

Yes, seems to be normal for fleet reviews vs actual naval parades.
In some fleet reviews you even bring out your traditional sail-training ship to show off your traditions.

The lead ship of the 055-class has quite a politically significant name: "Nanchang" is the city where the PLA, back then known only as "Chinese Red Army", staged their first uprising hence was considered their birthplace.
The pennant number 101 was unused for decades, even after the decommissioning of the original 101, the Anshan DD, which was the PLAN's first warship.

My point is that have at least some form of self-respect and send frigates like everyone else.
Even old frigates are fine, nobody wants their newest ships to be shipscanned by Chinks.
April 24, 2019 - 14:14
>nobody wants their newest ships to be shipscanned by Chinks Too late, honky. See
April 24, 2019 - 14:18
Lots of those navies cant afford and whatever ships they have is already being tailed by the Chinese during normal operations in the South China Sea and beyond.
The Suzutsuki for example is one of the newest ships in the JMSDF, but it already has had multiple closer encounters with shadowing Chinese frigates and destroyers in the past. So, whatever the Chinese can know, they already know.
April 24, 2019 - 14:19
