China had advisors and saw how effective US forces with western doctrines were in the Vietnam War.
Before the Sino-Vietnamese war they adopted advanced SKS variants as standard issue rifles - Type 63, 68, 73 - 20/30 round magazines, select fire, and their doctrine shifted in the late 60's towards a western inspired Rifleman supremacy doctrine, contrasting the Soviet volume of fire. The Type 56 AK's were used not as general infantry rifles, but for NCO's/Officers, Mech/Airborne infantry, Crewman, and rear/non infantry personnel who would greater benefit from volume of fire.
They gave their grunts SKS variants (culminating in the Type 81) because they weren't pleased with the practical accuracy of the AK.
These ideas were being used but were in their infancy when China invaded Vietnam - where it turns out gooks hiding in the bush don't need rifles under 3 MOA

If they keep focusing on wunderwaffen systems that have been tried before by other militaries without realizing why they haven't been adopted on a wide scale, they could have a problem of doctrine not keeping up with technology. And if what another user said about them having a command structure similar to the Soviets (lack of an NCO equivalent), than their doctrine while being advanced, might not be flexible enough for the absolute chaotic clusterfuck that warfare is even against the weakest power. This doesn't even bring in the Chinese government and economics becoming more centralized, which can make it much more susceptible to the lows of an economic downturn. The more power is placed on an autocrat, the more a successor can screw it up.
