What real world vehicle would you want to model your combat-capable spaceship to mimic? I've thought about a Viggen, or a Draken.

id rather my spaceship mimicked a spaceship instead of a failed nation-state's almost a warplane.

See, my objection to that is they all look like fucking flying skyscrapers, or glorified ball-point pens. Probably more practical or realistic, but much less aesthetically pleasing.

May as well be the coolest thing in the heavens while you're there

Why does SAAB make such aesthetic jets bros?

A spaceship can look like anything. In fact, the most efficient shape for a warship in space is a cube or sphere.

Not if you want to be able to enter atmosphere unless you're space has some super high tech antigrav propulsion or something

A Draken where the intake area is tapered into the nose to form chines would look badass. Mount RCS on the nose, tail, and wingtips, cover the thing in RCC, and you have yourself a space fighter(ish)

>unless you're space has some super high tech antigrav propulsion or something
You mean like those tic-tac UFOs the navy comes across?

Just strap some hustler engines to a draken and you've got a fighter for the space age.

Nice desu.

That'd better not be what I think that is.

You will have to try harder next time Vladislav

>they said the a-10 was designed around the gun
>then I see this

This is literally just a gun with wings and a pilot.

why didn't they at least build a demonstrator of this. it could be in the Air Force museum just down the road from me and I could go there every week and molest it.

Mines already a space ship

The Draken is already re-imagined as a space fighter.

No. They initially tried to build F-16 variant with reinforced wings and fuselage and internal 30x173mm gun called A-16, that ran into problems. Then they proceeded with much smaller modifications to F-16 called F/A-16 with four barrel version of GAU-8 in centerline gun pod as A-10 replacement in late 80's. Turned out recoil fucked up the plane far more badly than they anticipated. In 1990 congress forced air force to keep at least two wings of A-10's. You need to understand that air force never wanted to have A-10. Army essentially forced USAF to get A-10's in the first place.

Lead ship of the Zumwalt-class is already commanded by captain James A. Kirk.

Nice.
>f-16s in Europe 1(?)
Also nice.

A fridge. You'd be surprised at the capabilities!

>You need to understand that air force never wanted to have A-10. Army essentially forced USAF to get A-10's in the first place.
Yes, I read Col Boyds biography, there were Generals in the AF that didn't want anything to do with the A-10, but others that realized giving up the CAS mission to the Army would mean the loss of way too much money. And if the Air Force loves to do one thing is fuck the Army. During the Vietnam war the Army operated a small fleet in in theater cargo planes, the Air FOrce kicked and bitched telling congress all those planes should be operated by the Air Force and not the Army, well congress made the Army give them up to the Air Force. The Air Force immediately said the aircraft were out dated and retired them, thus chaining the Army to the AF.

Naboo fighter or Y-wing

I'm pretty certain photo was taken in US. The old school green European camo paint job is one of the serious modifications made to F-16 turn it into a dedicated CAS platform and A-10 replacement. The big thing on centerline hardpoint is GPU-5 gun pod with GAU-13, lighter four barrel version of GAU-8. Something that can't be fired from F-16 accurately and would basically wreck entire airframe quite quickly. Those were used on few F-16's in Gulf War and it turned out exactly like earlier testing. A complete fuck up, but they still had to try it out in actual missions. Getting rid of A-10 was that high priority for USAF.

For repeat of that Vietnam episode in modern conflicts we only need to take a look at C-27J debacle. Basically Army bought their Italian twin engine baby C-130J's. USAF was furious and all kinds of political backstabbing started. In the end Army gave up and C-27J's were handed over to Air National Guard. USAF promptly reduced the orders from 78 to 38 aircraft, driving up unit cost of the purchase way higher than C-130J. Since it was now very expensive aircraft, they retired 'em. Most of the aircraft were flown to boneyard straight from the assembly line. SOCOM wanted some of their aircraft for their own nefarious purposes and got 'em. Some went to Forest Service as firefighting aircraft and rest were handed over to Coasties. Who were told to want 'em and Coast Guard cancelled remaining orders HC-144's. That is a plane that far more suitable for the mission coasties use 'em for than HC-27J. Mostly due to being cheaper to operate.

wait you're telling me this thing is NOT a movie design?

The guy who designed that watched too much anime.

Its terrible, I love it.

>dubs

I'd wondered how long it was gonna take someone to post this.

The Viggen is easily one of the most beautiful planes to come out of the Cold War

This shit was ahead of its time

I want this so badly. It's badass sure, but that draken is just plain beautiful.

Fucking look at that coloration.

WHAT IN THE BLUE FUCK

Fucking MiGlets

That is Suklet.

Well, its the DX Chogokin Draken, good luck getting those.

Macross designs are generally sexy as fuck in fighter mode.

It's like someone threw random parts from a F-16, Naboo starfighter and BSG Viper plastic models into one pile and told a 12yo to build a airplane from it.
