Both of my BANNER tours were done on short term notice and as such the below may not have been typical for the time, but in 1972 I had '58 webbing, an SLR with three magazines (two of 15 for Belfast, three of 20 for elsewhere), water bottle for consumption, extra water, lightweights, NI gloves (I also had a pair of cut down goalkeeping gloves), two packets of John Player Specials, a lighter, various maps, field dressing and the small book of local terrorists. I also got to wear a beret, for head protection. Because it was the height of summer in Ulster it rained constantly, so I also had my Denison smock. Which was not waterproof in the slightest.
The next time round I had much the same rig (except with various bits of '68 pattern), with modern (German made) fireproof gloves, an M16A1 and five magazines of 28 rounds, a knackered HiPower and various bits of equipment that were of the cutting edge at the time but would now be on some sort of antiques electronics/photography show. Oh, and it was now a big book of local terrorists and the boots were marginally better.
I realise that, aside from the SLR and the M16, has nothing to do with the OP but I thought a bit of been there done that might be interesting.

I was a bit of a no fun allowed type and when a brick from the Yorkshire Regiment had brought with them loads of gay porn, dildos and other sex toys to plant in the bedroom of the son of a known PIRA gunman I told them to at least get rid of the chains as they were marked as British Army property. When the parents were summoned in (you couldn't search the kid's rooms unless they were present), I did manage to keep a straight face as they brought all the man on man grot out from under his bed.
On the other end of the spectrum, I was present at the aftermath of a bombing. A ten year old boy wandering around with no fingers on his left hand, covered in dust. A young woman, about my daughter's age at the time, cut in half from the blast. Later that week we found a Catholic bricklayer who had been near enough decapitated by two "Loyalist" (they were loyal to nothing) men because they wanted a bit of revenge. All because people either followed a Marxist or a religious zealot and thought eviscerating people doing their shopping was fair play.
I am quite an easy going man, especially as I get into my advanced years, but a lot of things that happened over there I've not seen replicated elsewhere. Even in Africa, the Middle East and the Balkans. There was a lot more to it than murals and songs. Rather paradoxically, some of the kindest and most pleasant people I've ever met in my life were Northern Irish people of all persuasions.
Oh, and it rained all the time. 365 days a year.

Yes, going back to 1962 the Army had AR pattern weapons in service. I've posted about this at length before, but if you want a summary Google "Borneo M16 British Army" or something like that. In fact, the M16A1 may have been the only weapon that saw use all the way from 1969 to 2006 in some official form or another.
In NI the Close Observation Platoons had them, along with certain other individuals. They were very popular, but numbers meant that only a few would be issued per battalion. They were also carried by various police units at times, later replaced with SA80 and MP5. Others had Mini 14s.
