In pistol calibers only two things matter: shot placement and penetration.

Anything else is a meme. A fmj 9mm is perfectly fine; going for a more powerful round only to nerf its "overpenetration" down using hollow bullets is only marginally more efective shot by shot, but at the expense of less capacity and more recoil. Even .380 fmj or .38sp lead roundnose are just fine.

Exceptions are if you want/need longer range or overpenetration because you want to shoot through barriers easier (which was why they invented .357 magnum in the first place for example; not for high velocity expansion shit).
