Most of them aren't smart enough to think any deeper than "me side good, him side bad" so killing insurgents would be a completely automatic function for them. Many are enlisted for selfish reasons and would care far more about their cheese than the people. A lot of them are total cuckservatives who would brand the insurgents as "unamerican", particularly if they had some kind of racial ideology. Worst of all are the edgelords who joined just to kill and have been waiting for an excuse to kill you (yes, YOU) ever since they signed up. A lot of military personnel could do a lot of harm to the mission by simply being bad at their job. Vehicle maintainers could actually stop missions from being started just by failing to diagnose a problem. Intel could give false information that could totally have changed since they discovered it. Armory guys could just fuck a tiny bit with weapon internals to make the guns malfunction every 50 shots or so, or just un-zero the sights.

There will be a small minority of defectors and not to mention Russia will DEFINITELY support any rebel group in the U.S if this hypothetical scenario did occur.
