The Russians tested a Kilo fitted with a pump-jet to analyse its pros and cons came to the following conclusion

>The Russians tested a Kilo fitted with a pump-jet to analyse its pros and cons came to the following conclusion.

>Pump-jets are primarily used to reduce cavitation noises which are prominent during acceleration and deceleration.
>Cavitation noise goes down as depth increases.
>Russian boats traditionally operate at higher depths compared to western boats, a tactic usually used to get rid of trials during cold war.
>Below 500m, there is virtually no cavitation even at high speeds.
>Every pump-jet has an optimal speed for noise reduction, beyond which it acts like a resonance box thus limiting the range of possible speeds for a submarine.

>Thus they don’t need pump as their overall design and capabilities take care of the requirement. The Boreis need them as they would need to operate near the surface for launching their ballistic missiles and hence Boreis have pump-jets while Kazan and the lead boat (885 Yasen) don’t.

Is he correct Jow Forums ?

some of it's bullshit to an extent the soviets liked to operate at higher depth often enough simply because of their chin mounting of their forward arrays because of the autoloader placement. which was always in contradiction to the double hull deep diving design of their pressure hulls.

additionally he's kinda ignoring the one of the main zones that virgina's have been optimized for, which is within the littoral zone.

>additionally he's kinda ignoring the one of the main zones that virgina's have been optimized for, which is within the littoral zone.

He's talking about Russian subs and why they like traditional propellers and not using pumpjets, he's not talking about Virginia.

Go on?

>Pump-jets are primarily used to reduce cavitation noises which are prominent during acceleration and deceleration.
>Below 500m, there is virtually no cavitation even at high speeds.
>Every pump-jet has an optimal speed for noise reduction, beyond which it acts like a resonance box thus limiting the range of possible speeds for a submarine.
Very interesting, so pumpjets are useful for shallow depths at certain speeds.

Do you have a source?

he's talking about the kilo which is pretty much meant to contest Virginias out of coastal waters by ambushing them and being quiet. a pump jet is infinitely superior if you want better speeds in shallow waters which is part of why kilo can only do something like 7 knots quietly with a traditional screw.

the real reason like usual for russians lacking tech like pump jets is that they have always been behind on this aspect of propulsion design and it's is stil prohibitively expense for them to put it on anything and everything.

not to mention there really aren't any post soviet submarine designs currently in the russian navy even the yasens have such origins

The Russians stopped with pumpjets because they couldn't keep Alrosa out of maintenance for very long, which says more about the ongoing issues with upkeep in the Russian Navy than anything.

Kilos don't use traditional screws on shallow waters. That's why it only travel at 7 knots. By using its magnetohydro crocodile drive.

The OP post literally says Borei has pumpjets.

Propulsion

The submarine’s propulsion system consists of two diesel generators, a main propulsion motor, a fuel-economic motor and a single shaft driving a seven-blade fixed-pitch propeller.

There are two additional stand-by motors for running in shallow waters, at mooring and in cases of emergency. Two 120-cell storage batteries are installed in the first and third compartments of the submarine. The main machinery is equipped with an automatic control system.

Better view of thrusters for shallow operations.

borei is ssbn it must operate at 150ft when it's ready to do it's job which is the most important of all

>magnetohydro crocodile drive
it's Caterpillar drive my dude atleast meme Clancy correctly

>Shallow water thrusters are Russian conscripts
But where do the oars come out of from within the hull?

I think you're fooling yourself if you think that you're only going to be operating at deep depths

That was in response to who says
>not to mention there really aren't any post soviet submarine designs currently in the russian navy even the yasens have such origins

Is like Moist Nugget.

RIFLE IS FINE.

No, it is definitely a Krokodil drive, see:

>would you launch an ICBM horizontally?

he's not wrong the borei was designed in the 1980's and only has a pump jet due to the very small numbers produced an being built decades latter than indended

Id like to operate in your littoral zone, user.

>the real reason like usual for russians lacking tech like pump jets is that they have always been behind on this aspect of propulsion design and it's is stil prohibitively expense for them to put it on anything and everything.

you cant be serious this is on the same level as with the "russian doesnt know how to built rockets and missiles" meme

what are you smoking ? pump jets on nuclear subs is the only way that it makes any sense what so ever because its the only way to elliminate cavitation at high speeds

something that a conventional sub cant do

They could use thrusters like these if they're not deep enough.

every time I see these threads I am always surprised at how well the information security is and how almost everything that is said is wrong about submarines

Any topic about any military hardware is awful here. Its almost exclusively whatifisms by neverserveds, euronogunz and subhumans from all walks of life. Incredible.

The Attack class uses pumpjets and it's non-nuclear.
Then again, they're basically chop shop Barracudas, and it's likely the French simply didin't bother changing the design.

I too use ruffles to propel my submarines

Inferior American ships use caterpillar drives, while superior Russian subs have crocodile drives. But the most impressive is the Chinese subs which are fully equipped with Caracal drives.

That's old model submarine, Chinese new model submarines use Cuantum Drives!

Jow Forums is an F-16.net echo chamber, saying that it is exclusively subhumans from all walks of life is very rude.

>Attack class

yeah i love how they say it has such a over the top range its like physics dont apply to them

its a mindfuck of info but aspistrategist.org.au/pumpjet-future-submarine-not-fast-slow/

if you understand what happens in the low speeds you know aussies are fucking lying

Why would you want better speeds in shallow waters when you're trying to ambush them?
