MREs don't require cooking, and so in an emergency you can eat them on the go. And when you're at the FOB or back in the rear there are actual kitchens which cook Actual Food

If the MRE triples the cost but halves the chances of a missed meal or burned hand it still has requisite value. Your logistics planning must take into account operator error, medical expenditures and risks etc..

Speaking of the rear, in Desert Storm my dad said they were served chicken and his friend pointed out my dad's piece was a butthole. Apparently he dug around the meat, and it was in fact a butthole. Serves proof that the food is real, at least, but after that he just wanted MREs.
