I once read a journal entry from a soldier in WW1. Their own side opened gas over No Mans Land, then the wind shifted. And this guy explains that he wakes up in an underground rack, with his partner (below him, gas was heavier than air, so it went down into trenches). His buddy there died, and he was able to get his mask on in time.
Gas warfare isn't just about breathing it in. There are gas types which are deadly just to be in, because it will contaminate and kill you just blowing against your skin. Which is why with any threat of chemical warfare, our infantry is supplied with gear that covers them head to toe.

Chemical weapon SIGNIFICANTLY degrade (cant emphasis that enough) the capabilities of infantry units protected or not. Movement, visibility, basic function from digging entrenchments to eating food, morale and basically every other aspect of being a soldier is significantly impaired in an area contaminated by chemical weapons.
Now throw in some fragmentation rounds into the mix and suddenly even that tiny non lethal shred of metal fragmentation that just tore a hole in your suit has compromised your safety.
Look into the Iran-Iraq war if you want some examples of effective modern use of Chemical weapons, they were effective in creating quick large blocking or hindering areas for enemy troops as well as making well defended static positions unsustainable. Because the reality is even with protection on who the fuck wants to go anywhere near an area with invisible chemicals in the air and on the ground that can make your skin blister grotesquely on touch, permanently blind you or make your muscles system go rigid as you choke on your own vomit and froth.

G in NATO codes for tabun (GA), sarin (GB), soman (GD) and cyclosarin (GF) stands for Germany, designations originate in bongistan and entire NATO adopted it when it was formed.
The worst allied exposure to chemical warfare in WWII was German air raid on harbor of Bari in Italy. One of the US ships in harbor was full of mustard gas. Hundreds of US sailors and soldiers were exposed and naturally everything was covered up. In addition hundreds of Italian civilians were exposed as well. US medical staff on the location was completely incompetent when it came to treating people suffering from mustard gas poisoning, causing hundreds of unnecessary casualties.

Depends on the gas. Chlorine gas was rather easily counter-acted. Mustard gas works on your skin too and was significantly more deadly overall.
