Its early night vision you fucking smooth brains. 30-06 was overkill because the optic couldn't even see close to the effective range of 30-06. It also would damage the optic.

It was one of the first US night vision optics. they put it on a M1 carbine because the weight with the battery pack and scope was considered too cumbersome on the regular M1 or M14 rifle. The range wasn't the best on the optic either so it didn't suffer from being mounted on the carbine.

Literally just make it an M2, put it in a polymer inline stock, add optics and it's just as good as any modern shit blowback 9mm. Less reliable but with a better cartridge and lighter recoil.
