I got to shoot an SL8 recently, and all things considered I was very impressed:
>heavy barrel, very accurate
>reliable gas system
>Canadian variant, so not stuck with just the 10 round single stack magazines
>weight meant that recoil was basically non-existent.
The weight was really the only downside, and even then it's not that bad. It weighs basically the same as an SG 550; sure it's got some heft to it, but it's not going to stop me from carrying it around. If only it had a folding stock, then it would be perfect for hiking around with.

Cx4 cause BSG larp. All memes aside, it's a very fun gun to shoot. If you've got 1000 rounds of 9mm, I can't think of a better gun to burn through it with.

M14 EBR. Don't care how outdated its action is and its weight limiting it as a practical rifle, it's just cool and aesthetic as fuck.

I want nothing more than to live in a reality where the M14 was good. It’s by far the coolest looking gun in existence but I could never trust my life with it. I can’t even justify buying a variant for CMP at this point in my life.

that's how I feel about the F2000. Cool as shit and looks awesome with the factory optic (subjective, but it tickles my Halo fantasies). I really fucking wanted it to do well but every other modern carbine is better, made zero sense for anyone to adopt it.

There's another option I was researching into and that was Bula Defense. $1.5k MSRP for their XM21 22" and then $700~850 puts a complete XM21 EBR at $2.2~2.4k. The only thing that put me off was that I needed more time to properly figure out how to build up from one of their receivers. At that point, I jumped onto matching my AR-15 with an AR-10 and chose to bide my time.

Honestly, too many people on here give the M14 and its derivatives too much shit for its own good. None of us are ever going to deploy with it or even with a superior rifle of our own choosing at the end of the day, so it's pointless to split hairs.

It's a real shame that Norincos got ban hammered, we could have some pretty neat rifles on the cheap if they were still allowed to import. This is the QBZ05, it's a Type 95 but in a standard configuration as opposed to bullpup. They also have a Type 81 export model that's chamber in 7.62 NATO. Apparently Bangladesh has Type 81 rifles that they produce locally under contract, I'm curious what it would take to import those rifles in the US as parts kits, building them to 922R would be a nightmare though because no one makes that shit here and there is basically zero interchangeability with AK parts.
