$600 for a run-of-the-mill 91/30 is robbery. You sure it wasn't a Finnish one or something else rarer?
Most 91/30s I see now are like $275-350 and it's clear now that they're not the cheapest "entry" gun anymore. You should only be buying a Mosin Nagant if you want one. Otherwise for a milsurp some Mausers are about as much (or like $100 more) and they are generally nicer guns. 8mm is still plentiful and not that expensive.
Hell, even some Swiss K31s, Jap Type 38s, or Italian 6.5 Carcanos are cheaper guns now. I see them a lot at gunshows and stores, but the biggest expense there is the ammo, clips, and reloading.

Just in 2013 I got a hex mosin matching numbers for $100 dripping of cosmoline. These things are only going to get worse for new gun owners. However AR15s are a killer deal right now.
