What's the military situation in Afghanistan

Some memelord on Jow Forums told me the situation was actually deteriorating but I can't trust them because those faggots hate the military. What's the truth? Is it actually getting worse?

What's stopping you from actually finding out yourself?

We lost and are basically letting the Taliban run the country
>that's not true user, based Trump will make Afghanistan great agai-
shut the fuck up you retard. We're going to see a repeat of the fall of Saigon except this one we're going to get to see in HD. The Afghan gov't has been left out of negotiations for years now.

Taliban controls most of the country sides if I'm not mistaken, they've basically taken back over every area US forces withdrew from. The Peshtuns tribal regions was to Afghanistan as Laos/Cambodia was to Vietnam. It's not looking good

It's going exactly the way you think an unstable democracy based on hundreds of warring tribes would go.

US keeps forgetting that this part of the world need strong leadership to control everything. Hearts and Minds tactics don't work on people who don't have hearts or minds.

You gotta be like Alexander. Conquer, demand complete and total subjugation, and have some sort of monarchy to marry to solidify rule, legitimacy and authority.

My buddy was there in 09. They pushed the taliban into Pakistan’s. Now they are just growing poppy and pretending there is still a war.

Taliban are in control of more territory than they had 10 years ago, so it's definitely not improving

The former president Karzai is having separate peace talks with the Taliban leadership separate from the US-backed Government

Russia seems to be covertly assisting the Taliban

China don't care who wins because they're gonna do business with either party to get the stash of rare earth metals

Honestly, who gives a fuck? Pull American troops out and let the tribes do whatever. Have a few spooks keep ears open for 9/11 2 Electric Boogaloo.

Just a place for NATO to test weapons, and train mercenaries.

So what's the advantage of being there now? If we wanted to surround Iran the time to invade would've been a few years ago. Did obama's military plan on counting on Hillary for that?

if we pull out, the taliban gets control of the country and another slice of the planet becomes a full on terrorist factory with all the resources of a state. if we stay, they just hate us more and more, creating more terrorists there and worldwide

It was shit
It is shit
It will always be shit

Fwak that country

Shits fucked and we lost.

>taliban
>terrorists

They are a guerilla army whose ideas are no different from the Saudis.

Afghanistan is an existential power vacuum. They have a million dopey retarded dialects that make them sound like mentally challenged Persians. There are several different ethnic groups but none are so much stronger than the others that they can overppwer the others. The terrain is impassible and causes factionalization. The only region able to walk in and kick shit over is Iran, and thats a problem for the US.

>not hating the military
Fucking bootlicker

So is the US plan to stay there forever and develop coin technologies and give our infantry experience? And why do people still act like they are serving the nation over there?

Great fucking movie

yeah but they host al qaeda, allow camps and schools and such, and if they got the state apparatus back they might have a go at getting a dirty bomb or destabilizing pakistan to get their weapons

Foucault's boomerang

The Saudis also supported and funded al queda In Yemen. In fact they fund Wahhabism all over the world which is the reason why Sunni extremism is so popular nowadays

yeah, and it sucks that they do that, which is why it would also suck if afghanistan ended up the same way

Have you noticed that the major news outlets don't write about Afghan drug exports, girl schools or human rights violations any more? It's not for lack of events; the truth is, no journalist can set foot in the country any more. Not even in the old North Alliance strongholds any more. Every ANA soldier is a potential traitor, deserter, or existing only in the pay lists. USA negs with Taliban and doesn't even bother including the govt in the talks; the govt that afaik still receives a daily metric ton of dollar bills to 'help build democracry'.

Yeah, probably getting worse. At this point, if Taliban simply took over the govt today, 2/3 of the population would not even notice.

lol your buddy is a fucking retard and so are you for believing that.

Having a major military presence in Central Asia, to Russia’s south and China’s west, is generally a good thing. It’d certainly be nice if the country could stabilize, but the biggest value for the US at the moment is having troops stationed in spitting distance of its two biggest potential enemies.

They control just about 50%, but way under 50% of the population.

Pakistan is still helping the Taliban, pretty blatantly.

The government has the cities and major economic resources aside from opium though.

The Panshir and Tajik areas are not threatened. The Taliban only does well in Pashtun areas. Even before 9/11 the Taliban only had about 66% of the country under its control.

If the Soviets couldn't take the Panshir, the Pakis won't.

India is being more aggressive about the giving the Afghans aid. If the US backs out, India will be there to keep Afghanistan from being a Paki puppet.

So why don't we invade Saudi Arabia?

What do you think a few thousand lightly equipped infantry mired in endless guerilla warfare can do against Russia or china?

USA already have one base in Saudi Arabia, three in the United Arab Emirates, four in Kuwait, two in Bahrain, two in Israel, two in Oman, an unknown number in Syria and one in Quatar which alone has 10 000 personnel. How much more sand do you want the Marines to cover?

Does the Taliban have the hardware to go on the offensive and take control of the entire country?

>The Afghan gov't has been left out of negotiations for years now.
The "Afghan gov't" was basically a puppet, like more so than S. Vietnam.
Why give america two seats at the table?

A puppet that has done very little of what we've asked.
They'll bleed us out until we (correctly) leave.
Then things will be as they were in 2000.

About as much as 100 mercenaries can do in Venezuela. It’s not about actual effectiveness so much as the fact that they have to be considered. Also, having friendly airbases and supply depots in the region is much more important than the troops.

You mean, can they take control over Afghanistan while there still are Allied forces present? No. But once the last Western soldier leave they could take over the country with nothing more than shovels and forks because the entire current 'government' would be leaving the country as fast as their luxury passenger tickets could get them out. Most of the ANA army would either drop their uniforms and guns and go home, or put on their Taliban badges so fast they might even stop smoking weed for a moment. A very small percentage would bring their guns and uniforms and hole up with their mountain tribes, but would not otherwise stand in the way of the Talis.
