Well, for people who had a normal public schooling, which is most people's gateway to history when you're a kid, WW1 typically gets a minuscule blurb since the circumstances behind the war, to a bunch of kids, is disinteresting, as opposed to Germany's fucking zerg rush across Europe and the ensuing ghetto blasting and what not.

The Treaty of Versailles ensured that Germany would get unjustly assfucked with a war debt it couldn't pay off thus ensuring Germany got pissed later on. Also Russia became communist starting in 1917 so the red scare started

I went to (good) public school in Aus and my WW1 education went from the broad strokes - the preceding web of geopolitical alliances and rivalries, the use of propaganda by the different, the aftermath and ensuing social changes - through to the gritty details - the events of 28/06/14, the schlieffen plan, the ebb and flow of the campaign and certain individual battles. That's just what I remember years later.

He survived because he was either garrisoned or injured during the maneuver warfare phases of the war. Perhaps to no one's surprise being a poilu, an enlisted nobody, in the French army was fucking terrible.

In Canada we learn alot more about the First World War compared to the Second, since we contributed more contextually. I'm more of a WW2 nerd and pretty much all we covered in school was Dieppe and Juno beach. They make it seem like we were a huge deal considering the population size of Canada plus we were still a colony.

Here in the USA, the Civil War ended more than 150 years ago, but it's still not "over". If anything, it's more of an issue now that it used to be.
