Except Russians have been increasingly pissed about the expansion of EU and NATO, with former Soviet territories being EU memebers and NATO member, the latter being a military organization formed entirely to stand against them, and now it has troops o their doorstep and a missile shield, and Russians have exactly zero faith in the west having any interest in Russia's well being. Despite this things were relatively cordial, except then Ukraine happened. Funny thing, there are so many multinational projects including Russia, and diplomatic workers on both sides just kinda go on business as usual while the government public figures have a go at each other. A good part of it is essentially a show to make the politics easier to digest for regular people.

That is a heap of horseshit, after the cold war there were even thoughts about that Russia would join NATO one day after former warsaw pact states started joing, some people are old enough to remember, but that would not happened til their neighbours would be save from them and they would stop being an enemy to the west. In the end it is like always with Russia: They are in a shitty situation they got themself into, they are busy blaming everyone else for it and even using the fake blame as reason for their actions. They could have it all, but instead they once fell for other leaders that bring them misery and that need external threats to justify their grip to the power.
