Unless you’re deeply interested in the history of swords or using them in some sort of martial art, just don’t. It’ll look weird regardless, but at least those two options give you a justification beyond just being autistic.

of you plan on chopping dudes up just get a machete

There's a great many different kinds of swords. Which speaks to you is for you alone to figure out, and it isn't like there's a lot of practical concerns to have nowadays about such. Of course figuring out what sword is what (for example, when I tried to look into scimitars I couldn't find any info on them, all I found was tulwars and kilijs and palas and shamshirs and...) and what exists to choose from can take quite a bit of homework even if you do limit yourself somewhat in time and space.
Then there's the part where there's a lot of ways to go about making a sword today. Should the metal be as close to historical as possible+ Should it simply be as good as historical? Or should we start wringing out as much performance as we can with modern metallurgy? Can the look be clearly modern, historical from a distance, to someone who doens't quite know his stuff? Something even the experts will need to study in detail to tell it isn't an antique? Do you want things properly weighted and balanced, or is a steel bar good enough there? Should it be sharpened, unsharpened, blunt or outright safe for sparring? How much can things cost, and how much of that budget is to be spent on these various things? Etc. And then there's the option of buying an antique as well.

So which sword is the right one for you is hard for anyone else to say. Why do you want it? What do you want it for? And what makers match this? A good deal of lurking around over at myarmoury.com and other such (the specifics depending a bit on what kind of sword you may be after) can help, as can picking up some suitable books.

So a hwando or a tachi then...

[Low Intelligence] ICE CREAM!

Get a horse first user.

Ya
Dont

well, we've found the autist.

if someone says "I want to learn to ride a horse" do you also say "buy a car!"

If someone asks for a good book, do you tell them "yes, go buy a movie"

Yes, literally any japanese weapon. Don't listen to/be caught up in the HEMA bandwagon, they are worthless faggots who worship an AIDS ridden grizzly bear in a vain attempt to sound informed on historical sword fighting and armor.

We've done a 180 from how things used to be, now every childish retard goes on about "muh knights muh longsword muh messer muh pommels in my anus"

HEMA and SCA are all faggots who don't do any kind of real historical fighting. They just play whack a mole with more steps.

You're an idiot if you want to buy one sword and hang it on your wall and not break it. They're disposable items you use and break like guns. If it functions correctly you maybe baby it and give it a little more love and care. If you're just trying to get the thing, you can find factory seconds from most places that are great quality but not what they want associated with what they do with it typically. You get what you pay for if you're lucky. Buyer beware sounds fucking retarded if you want a specific thing and are resorting to retard comments to find vendors. Most places have a quality control check if you're seriously interested in getting the kind of thing. Even shitty ones to play around with and probably break playing around with it, there is different levels of quality control. Wall hanger only award, actually intended for use, defective to quality control for use but still somewhat usable, then the kind of thing you'd maybe ask about buy it once and that's it no matter what so it doesn't matter if you get scammed. Even if you got the best thing ever, if you're a dumb ass you're going to break it, and then come back and complain overall these all suck and don't ever use these ever.
