I remember a documentary on IEDs on the History Channel from like a decade ago. They followed a US caravan to a wide-open area in the desert where there was a huge IED sitting in the middle of the path with absolutely nothing around it. Their solution was not to just shoot it a few times until the container lost all integrity, but rather, they sent their $10billion robot to defuse it manually all the while talking about how it could possibly be remote detonated.
