WW1 was by the rules to the point that any time the Germans got assfucked by a single thing, they'd run to the Hague and demand a ban, despite laughing at Britain when Britain demanded a ban on machine guns in trenches due to the inhumane amount of murder they could put out for similar reasons.
WW1 was absolute horse shit for any soldier as well. Sure more people in WW2 died civilian side but the soldiers in WW1 were literally rotting in the trenches while alive while their leaders sat on ivory thrones and drinking conjac and musing themselves how best to throw their troops into a meat grinder for maximum effect/lulz.

My grandfather was stationed in Italy in WWII, flew 39 bombing missions in B24's over Europe. He said that they'd go to hit a rail yard and 1 week later the rails would be completely repaired because the Germans had tent cities with thousands of people living in them set up nearby who were forced to rebuild the rails when they got bombed. They started bombing the tent cities along with the rails after a while and the rail yard wouldn't get rebuilt for a month or so because the Germans then had to find several thousand more people to repopulate their tent city work camp before they could start rebuilding the rail yard.

A large part of the reason there was such large-scale starvation in Germany late in the war was that the US introduced the Colorado Potato Beetle to Europe in 1942, causing widespread famine. The bugs are all over Europe now, and remain significant agricultural pests.
