The recoil impulse is fuck all, as in measurably less than 5.56 even, with comparable velocity. The downside is the Russians give zero fucks when it comes to effective and modern bullet design, so even though 7.62 and 5.45 are completely capable cartridges, the terminal performance sucks dick, compared to other intermediates like 5.56 with updated loadings like mk318mod1. Those bullets can be shoved in 5.45 though if you wanted.

Against soft targets, 7n6/Commercial 5.45 will out perform pretty much every 5.56 round out there. Against armored targets you will have a hell of a time with most 5.56 and theres basically no 5.45 in Murica that is capable. If we had access to all the real 5.45 rounds than it would be a no brainer that 5.45 is the winner. Unless you are going up against heavy armored dudes, than 5.45 is still the winner. 5.45 doesnt rely on speed to make the bullet function. So a krink and a full size will do the same thing to a person.

I like it and I think it has advantages over 7.62x39, 5.56, etc. in terms of performance but best? No. They all perform similar enough that its a non issue, and whatever you can actually get and commonality with your friends means a lot more...at which point the 5.45 becomes dogshit. .223/5.56 or nothing at this point.
