It works perfectly fine on grizzlies, you just can't be a shit shot. You can't be a shit shot with any caliber because you're not going to just deter those things by injury, you need to incapacitate them. With a 9 you get more rounds and easier follow up shots if you miss. You want the ability to poke more holes in a situation like that because you're likely going to be shitting yourself.

After looking at a range tests I trust .40 to be adequate for innawoods. 10mm is a MEME to sell expensive "specialty" guns and ammo. It doesn't do that much better than .40, certainly not enough to justify its ridiculous cost.

If you're lucky you hit the aorta or heart, if you're not as steady you'll at least hit the lungs which are a fairly large target. The method of death in that case will be the lungs filling up with enough blood that the target can no longer uptake oxygen to power the brain/muscles. If you hit the heart/aorta, the body will no longer be able to pump blood to the brain or muscles. Essentially both methods work to as quickly as possible starve the brain of blood/oxygen and cause incapacitation. The other quick method is destroying the brain, or starving the brain through a hole in the neck. Both are smaller targets than the killbox.

You DO NOT want to count on a limb or nonessential organ hit, in those cases you're waiting for a large enough amount of blood to drain out of a small hole in order to cause incapacitation. This can take all day, and typically the body can clot a wound in a non vital area before it causes the body to bleed out.

Basically, you're better off learning where a bear's killbox is than you are reading any sort of ballistic tests.

If you're worried about brown bear or bigger, a good stopping rifle (like .45-70 with hot heavy hardcasts) or a shotgun with slugs is first line of defence, and a large magnum with hot heavy hardcasts as a backup.
If black bear is as big as things are getting, shot for shot 9mm will do the same as 10mm, might as well go with thecapacity, or like .357 for the aesthetic.
Also 10mm in steel guns is a good way to crack a frame.
