What type of changes would you make to the MG-42 to be practical enough to be used as an assault rifle like the M4A1 or AK-74m?

Make it an STG-44 or FG-42

I don't think you could reasonably push an MG-42 into that role, user.

>full blown rifle cartridge
>"assault rifle"
Also that 1200rpm is literally uncontrollable.

chamber in .22 hornet
cut half of the barrel
use ammo bag

less of everything

>chamber in 5.56
>change belt-fed to magazine fed
>use a semi-DI system
>make it out of aluminium and polymer
>lower RPM to 700-800
>add mounting system for optics and accessories
>add last round hold-open

Which would make it unrecognizable as an MG42, I mean, the ergos and appearance would need to be changed too.

All good suggestions. In addition I'd personally rather not have it fire from the open bolt position, so completely redesign the action as well. Open bolt guns are too risky to carry on red in general.

Genetically engineer an uber soldier. Bigger, faster, stronger. The problem wasnt the gun, it was the people.

Eh... Rechamber to something intermediate, cut down the length, add a foreend, add a compensator, make it fire 3 round bursts, give everyone 60 round ammo sacks.

7.62x25

shrink that bitch down to the size of an UMP or some shit and cover it in rails or mlok

quad barbette mount on my truck
BRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRT

This is truly the best course of action.
Based and Stonerpilled

It already exists. The FG-42!

Just make it a CETME Ameli.

Any changes will effectively neuter the mg, making it a useless rifle. I love the mg 42, iconic to the end. I just imagine the echoes of this mg defending the last German streets.

I think argentina did this

The FG42 is more like the inbetween of a battle rifle and an 'automatic rifle' (old full powered MGs eating from box mags).
Even if we consider that intermediate powered infantry rifles were the true future, the FG42 was still actually a fairly progressive and forward thinking design, especially if we consider that the later FAL, which was the popular NATO battle rifle (and an alright infantry rifle), was absolutely lousy when people tried to make it be a light support weapon.

Copying the FG42 design and developing it for an intermediate rifle cartridge I think would be a better gun than OP's idea.
Not necessarily the 7.92x33mm (which is good for CQB, but leaves a little bit to desire for range), perhaps shortening the 7.92x57mm case to say, 40mm in length and necking it down to 7mm would be more optimal.
Speaking just from a pure hypothetical though, I know full well Germany's inherently lackluster logistics, then quite crippled by the 1940s, wouldn't allow for wild experimentation like this.
