Early reviews say the finish is good. Wood isn't the best but looks great.

Is the type 56 not an AKM clone? Or is it a Spiker?
My only knowledge of Chinese rifles is based on 30 years ago, so it may seem stupid.

I'm currently making my own buttstock from a shovel handle.
I was thinking of wrapping the wood on the handle with leather or something after I stain it and put sealant on it.
I'm open to ideas.

Oh it's the stock comb and angle. That makes sense now.
The wood on that AKM looks almost bakelite-esque. Way too much poly.

I took measurements and 3D printed a template. All I have to do is shave off the parts that stick above the cutouts

Nice. I wouldn't even stain it then, personally. Just preserve it and stabilize those splits.

A single 10 rounds mag with the Cugir yes. At least the chinks send three 30 rounds mags with their rifles.

Wood glue and clamps or epoxy. There's plenty of info, videos, and products out there.
I'd probably go with a clear epoxy to show off the cracks, and then clear coat it and buff it down to a satin finish with 0000 steel wool.
I'm just spitballing so take it with a grain of salt.
Hell you could just rub shellac on with a sock until its pretty. Worked for BT.

And you get 3 30s with the SDM? That seems on par with how their rifles were sold here long ago.

Shoot it, carry it, etc. You'd be surprised how quickly that sexy look sets in if you just take it places with you. Just practice a bunch, even if it's just messing around with it in your apartment. Assuming you don't have land to do the other stuff as much.

Dry fire practice and fingerfucking it for a month straight, empty mag reloads with steel magazines, flip the safety until the muscle memory develops, field strip and reassemble on the clock, do all of those ninja tricks in those Russian AK handling videos.

All of the handing, the scratches from bungled reloads and safety switching and the small wearing in dings from reassembling too fast will give you a nice amount of use patina typical of most AKs in conscript service. The bonus is that you learn to become good at handling and maintaining your AK.

Only the receiver is artificial, the rest of the kit is the same as it was the day I got it. Obviously on a rewelded receiver it’s impossible to preserve a finish.

Whats the best parts kit? I have access to a lot of tools that id need so im not worried about that part of the cost. Also is their guide to the compatible recievers or special parts i need? or for a beginner is it just worth buying a new built rifle? Id will to spend a grand give or take total.

Romanian kits are plentiful and fairly cheap. There are Russian kits out there as well as Maadi and East German, but on the off chance you fuck them up I'd say get those rarer/more unique kits built by a shop until you're competent at building kits. There are some tutorials on YouTube that go way in depth. Flandre is a guy that does great tutorials on YouTube. Evidently he shows up in /akg/ from time to time as well. And if building seems too involved for a first rifle, browse GunBroker/Armslist/pawn shops for a deal on a WASR or RH-10 or a good deal on a higher end rifle like an Arsenal or a Vepr/Saiga if you don't mind spending a few more dollars.

depends on the model, I am autistic and all of the weird variants I own I try to keep in as close to milspec issue as possible.

Do the holes in the gas piston exterior matter? Some AKs have holes there and others don't have holes

i prefer it without the slant if its a donger ak or an AKMS, but i only prefer it on AKMS' if the gun has bumpless grips

holes are older designs (or chinese) newer ones have the excess gas ported out of little holes at the end of the gas block where the gas tube meets

Personally I think they're ugly and they're also not very functional
I get it if you're trying to do a clone rifle but they're literally only better than a bare muzzle
