I think you underestimate the very nature of Saskatchewan and its people. They are one of the most heavily armed provinces in Canada, beyond that many of them are hearty outdoorsmen who have a thorough understanding of not only backroads, but also the river systems and lakes. A good percentage of the gun owners in that province have high powered moose rifles with decent optics, it would not be as easy as some would imagine. Beyond that, the Winter conditions are a deadly weapon in their own way. The severity of the resistance would largely depend on who it is they were having to fight.
