Unless there's something I'm not aware of those aren't 1916 stahlhelms, the 1916 is the WWI model with a slightly different shape and the two big lugs, the Finnish ones on IMA are m40s made in the third reich and west Germany for export to Finland.

I never "got" the design on that helmet. It was from an era where guns were quite effective, and the most armored people just wore breastplates. Why the upturned "snout" and giant ridge running along the back? Defense from downward melee strikes? Something to do with ease of production? I dont know

Yes, the M56 and most steel helmets can at 10 yards. The M56 can supposedly stop 7.62 Tokarev, but it failed in the only test I’ve seen. Regardless, it is still more effective than most steel helmets.

It was designed for pike combat. It would deflect frontal pokes if you kept your head down and it would also help deflect glancing blows to the side of your head. It was never meant to be any sort of protection against guns. Everyone ended up using it for decades ecause it was cheap easy to make and it was decent in all sorts of melee fighting.
