In short. The people who run the jail are litterally retarded. People who worked there for years fuck everyone by taking time off. You will get mandatory over time because of this. 16 hour days are normal. Don't ever be nice. Tell inmates to fill out an IIR or a Kite when ever they need something. One time I was showing a trainee officer around, and a patient walked by us down a corridor laughing with a whole roll of toilet paper in his hands. We went to the end of the hall and checked the doors, and walked back. We saw the patient attempt to hand the roll of toilet paper to a behavioral health technician, and she touched it and recoiled in disgust. She dropped it, and when it landed, fresh wet shit splattered everywhere. Apparently he shit down the middle of the roll and pissed on the paper and wanted to give it to the tech as a gift. Very thoughtful.

I can't say for sure about all American mental hospitals but I can talk about my state's.

My hospital's infrastructure is showing its age. Our civil unit was built around 2001, our forensic unit around 2011, and the sexually violent predator unit in the 1970's. Almost all of the support buildings date to the 1960's or earlier.

I've never had the opportunity to see a Eurocuck mental hospital, but I assume it's a lot more like their prison system. Unfortunately, sleek design and clean lines and bright colors don't rehabilitate people with chemical or physical deficits in their brains.

We get our fair share of hooch made on the forensic side, we do our best to mitigate it and reduce the amount of food scrap that's left behind and prevent food items from being taken to patient rooms, but it still happens.

CO here at a women’s facility. Best advice I can give when dealing with inmates especially being new is start off by being a by the book asshole (you can tone it down once you start getting some time in), never give the inmates more than what’s coming to them, be fair and consistent, treat the inmates like they’re people (even though they are all pieces of shit). Now when dealing with other staff - try and be friendly with everyone, don’t get wrapped up in the drama and try your best not to hookup with other CO’s.

Officer here. In our state specifically, Severely Mentally Ill persons cannot be charged with assault, even felony assault if they are adjudicated as being Severely Mentally Ill at the time. This leads to our staff being assaulted and severely injured with literally zero repercussions.

When you find the odd hot particle you encapsulate it in tape and get rid of it. Plants are kept very clean and there is a ton of oversight. The industry is very risk and accident adverse. And the pay is great.

its honestly a fucking terrible job, imagine every bad thing about being a police officer, but not having as much authority and you cant just shuffle them away to jail. Youre stuck with them 24 hours a day and have nowhere to go. That being said you can make really good money and overtime, the union is strong and a lot of guys use it as a stepping stone to other LEO departments. Some advice though

little things you can fix, like a leaky pipe in the bathroom or making sure the guys that need medicine get it on time. If you push off your responsibilities it will get back to them and they will give you a hard time. But, some will try to test their limits and you need to be a hard ass and remind them youre in charge and can make their lives even more miserable. Its a constant tight rope walk, but after a while they will size you up and you will size them up
