I've been looking to buy one for larping in both the forest and the desert, as well as a nifty thing for whenever it rains while I'm camping
Where is the best place to buy one, and are they even good for hot weather?

star wars larping are not they look based af and are pretty effective camo since they help break up your body. they are going to move more than tight fitting clothes tho but I def want to find a quality camo poncho. You can use em as makeshift shelters too

Real operator gear, they keep you kinda warm so I don't know how well for summer, but you can get cold even during summer if you get wet, so they're good. I just went cheap with mine so it tears but it's nice and light weight. Plus carrying a rifle underneath is relatively subtle.

A few more points, staying dry during a operation keeps you lighter and more comfortable. And it's nice that the snap buttons allow you to rip it away quickly if you need the flexibility.

a smock is better, you wear a poncho because you want a tarp or need excess rain coverage for you gear.

I don't know if you'll literally ever hear anyone who's spent significant time in the field shit talk the trusty old poncho. Keep it easily accessible in your pack so if it starts raining you just grab it, put it on, and charlie mike. Staying dry is one of the only real accessible comforts in the field, and it might just save your life. Somewhat unrelated, poncho liners are also amazing. A woobie is light, takes up very little space, and insulates better than it has any right to.

stupid question but where could i look at getting a decent one of these online?

This. Get decent waterproof gear. In my time in the military no one wore those things, they were used to make bivi shelters

Good luck finding even shitty previous-issue G.I. ones. All they sell are remakes. Just look for the heaviest one.

Are there any available online from other armies? As long as it works thats all I need, but if it looks cool or is camo that helps :D

You can get remakes that work, lol. But you won't be using them as a stretcher anytime soon and the grommets can start to tear out if you tension your ridgeline a little too tight or stake it out too far trying to desperately cover your pack AND your bivvy in a rainstorm.

This is what I bought a few years ago: helikon-tex.com/en_eur/po-mus-po-poncho-u-s-model.html

Same here. It was useful just not for wearing. Most of the time I'd use it to wrap my rucksack so it wouldn't get soaked leaving it on the ground.

ponchos are for standing guard for 8 hours not operating.

I like ponchos and use one in the rght circumstances but if it's 70-75F+ and you are on the move you might as well get rained on because any rain gear you put on will just make you sweat until ur wet anyway.

They look based

those aren't ponchos those are jedi robes

The soldiers in mgs looked pretty aesthetic though

Extremely.

has good taste. You can get one of their ponchos and combine it with their swagman roll as a liner to make a really comfy setup for either walking or sleeping in. All waterproof.

They keep you dry, can be good camo, can be used as a tent, and they aren't hard to store. Jow Forums as fuck.

Sportsmans guide where you got that pic should be fine

I have been a field soldier for over 30 years. My poncho is likely the most heavily used item I have, but I could probably count the number of times I have used it as a poncho on my fingers and toes.

Get one, it really is very useful. And a waterproof bag while you are at it for your sleeping bag a fresh clothes.

I picked up a pretty heavy one online that came with my flecktarn parka. I haven't used it but it seems pretty rugged and thick. On a hike I can imagine it would come in great handy if it rains.

Why have you been a field soldier for over 30 years? You suck that bad at your job?

I can tell you OP, I have a Polish wz. 98 poncho and it's a fucking lifesaver. Get one if you can.

be Aragorn, wear (and sleep in) a plash palatka

How the fuck are you suppose to use a plate carrier with one? PC goes over the poncho?

poncho goes over everything (incl backpack)

This

I bought a german surplus one and while it's heavy it is also really durable and doesn't flap around in the wind. In combination with a woobie I can sleep comfortably in summer and for winter I bring along liners for pants and jacket.

It's very easy to reach under your poncho. There's no actual reason to wear a PC over it.

no fucking way they would be wearing all that bullshit on a tropical island, it looks like a somehow more retarded wildlands remake

ponchos are very Jow Forums

Wearing everything over poncho is aesthetic af

The East German ones are similar and usually cheaper.

these harden up when wet...pretty cool

And what do soldiers do a fuckton of?

Lots of soldiers dont want to be officers and just get highest non-comissioned and then keep on living the sweet out door life.

Cold war european stuff are great. Swedish knäppetält, Polish Lavvu, German half-shelters and so on. Dirt cheap too.

I just want one to wear innawoods and hunt in. Especially during early muzzleloader season when it rains nearly every other day

Get one of these. It’s the classic plus from River City Garments. It’s really long though so if you’re on the shorter side you might want to cut the hem to fit. I’d only recommend wearing a poncho in extremely cold, wet weather though—freezing rain, borderline snowing. They’re almost all made of plastic which will make you sweat like crazy in even cool conditions.

The only correct poncho is the standard USGI issue ripstop nylon one, and a woobie if you're in a cooler area. A poncho is basic kit and extremely versatile. Failure to own one should be an executable offense.

I use the Snugpak patrol poncho when I’m backpacking. Is good.

Ponchos are weeb tier

I use my Jerven Fjellduken Hunter as one at times, but that's just one of its functions. It's long enough to wear as a robe(?), even with my pack on.
This stock picture is alright, but if you pull the rear up a bit you can wear a hood while you have your pack on.

goddam that looks good, going to see if I can find any

didnt they all get mowed down and lose the war

Well yeah, but you can hardly blame the ponchos for that, can you well?

You can still look good while getting mowed down and losing the war.

They are called plash palatkas. The hood arrangement is clever; a string goes through a half-oval tube and when it is pulled, the whole thing goes cloak shaped.

The closest you will likely find are tent halfs. Some have camo patterns, others are just olive drab. While they are made to function also as ponchos they are however rarely used in this way. Partly because our uniforms jackets have good water repellant traits, and partly because we don't get those monsoon showers.
