The officer actually did not have any legal justification to "secure" (i.e. temporarily confiscate) a legally possessed firearm that was not being used or suspected to be used shortly in a crime. You probably did the right thing given the situation because you made the mistake of informing but unless you live in a duty to inform state you should NEVER tell police you have a gun. At the end of the day, he is an armed stranger threatening you with force, whether legally justified or not, and should be viewed as someone for whom you may have an immediate need to shoot. He's not your friend, he's not automatically a good dude because he's in a uniform, he's another armed private citizen and could turn into a threat at any moment. You don't want to be escalating the situation or acting like an asshole, just hand him your documents. If they start giving you the third degree, just say "please run my documents officer, I would like to conclude the stop and carry on with my business, thank you." They might get belligerent at that point but fuck them. When getting pulled over tell the police you have a conceal carry and where the gun is. Sometimes the want to take possession, sometimes they just say keep your hands away form it.
