World altering discovery and they pretty much sever those ties? That's not realistic in context.

They both suck. Gate isn't guns vs. magic it's guns vs. swords and then there is sometimes magic but it mostly sides with guns. There isn't even stargateish internal/political/international meddling to help the not romans even a little bit.
