M60 barrel bags an ukulele cases for anything smaller than your standard rifle. If it's full length then really the cheapest bags you can get from your local pawn shop are by far your best bet. Extremely easy to get good bags for way below retail.

Actual question, what does a hardcase do that a nice padded soft case cannot do? I don't see the point in paying the extra, I do not feel that my guns can be damaged in a quality softcase.

Flying. If you're going on a trip and you plan on stacking shit around the case. If you have some optic that isn't considered rugged and you're going down a bumpy, dirty road (maybe just paranoia).

I use a Tsunami hard case. Really practical case, have cut out the foam for my durr rifle and semi auto shotgun, gonna get another one for my 6.5x55 and O/U.
If you carry them with you and whistle British Grenadiers, people let you skip ahead of them in lines.

Only hard cases. I don't trust a soft case to protect against from accidental drops or whacks against a wall. Plus they're great for decorating!

Nope, though the black case in would conceal it better since looks thicker and has that large front pocket.
A 26" Tenor case fits a standard underfolder perfectly, a 30" would be awkward assuming an AK was what you planed to put in it.
