What is the best .308 ammo to stock for the apocalypse? What bullet type is "good enough" in most situations (hunting, combat, barrier pen etc)?
Hard mode: The rifle you have for SHTF is a M1A style rifle with 22" match barrel and excellent optics setup.

Why not get lake city surplus. 149 grain bullet and usually cheaper per 500 than that
If it fires, that bullet is "good enough" for a SHTF scenario.
Know your gun. Buy a box or two of damn near any ammo you can get your hands on. Feed them through the gun. Take notes on any malfunction with that ammo and compare them to each other. You are a big boy. You can make a good decision for yourself if you do a modicum of leg work.
Also I know it's not what you're asking, but I'm with this guy You should be using something that is ridiculously common. If it gets to the point that you have to start scavenging you want something that everyone else is using so you can find food for your gun.

Keep in mind, if you somehow manage to burn through 500 rounds of ammo, you're probably doing something wrong. Unless you're intentionally getting into firefights, in which case, you're definitely doing something wrong.

Think about it rationally, the overweight and out of breath nec/k/beard prepper with no water/food/sanitation supplies/medicine but only 60 rounds of gunshow loaded 5.56 with no two matching cases doesn't stand a chance against the other overweight and out of breath incel with no water/food/sanitation/medicine but 61 rounds of 308 with the flashier cardboard packaging.

The one resource people never realize that is the most important is manpower. A community will always be stronger than lone wolves. Doesn't matter if you have 10k rounds of some ammo if you yourself are limited to only yourself shooting it.
