Well the Malaysians pulled out and they ended up building the ANZAC frigate with New Zealand
But they were now already locked into the Sea Sprite
Which is no longer in production!
So they decided to refurbish old airframes from the bone yards
While New Zealand took up the manufacturers offer to have new built
The Aussies thought they were getting a bargain and the Kiwis were being taken for a ride
The 30 year old frames needed extensive refurbishing and replacement, had stress fatigue, were years behind delivery schedule, during which maintenance contractors were being paid for nothing, and when finally delivered were overweight and underpowered
After 10 years of this and a billion dollars spent on nothing they finally cancelled it
Sold them for cents on the dollar to New Zealand to be used for spares for their new build Sea Sprites that were delivered on time and on budget.

cronyism should be abolished and the defense industry completely deregulated. replace top-down procurement system with a bottom up one.each soldier is given a budget for his kit and buys it himself, tank crews choose and buy their own tanks and can upgrade it all they want. pilots and squadron commanders buy their own jet fighters and missiles.officers who command men are given a special budget for heavy hardware for their men and so on.
this will eliminate the cronyism and politics of the defense industry, push competition to the limit and usher in a new era of innovation in military hardware. using the power of the free market every piece of gear will be better,cheaper and available faster while every person with a good idea will be free to enter the defense market with no red tape.

it's gonna be a wild west initially but it will very quickly be worth it.

if anything you'd have more ammo because it's gonna be cheaper and better (and under free market conditions we'd get caseless rifles with super lightweight ammo in no time).
also eventually as with any industry in a free market a handful of clear winners will emerge and there will be plenty of other people using the same gear as you.

the gains the army will have by finally making the defense industry cater to the soldier instead of politicians will FAR outweigh the loss of standardization which is overrated anyway. besides any logistics problems that might emerge will have dozens of companies lining up for you to sell you the solution. your commander will just buy a bunch of drones that can quickly deliver supplies to you in the field in emergencies for 10% of the price such a system would cost under the current system and you'll probably see this system 5 years earlier then under the current procurement system.

this idea will work for the same reason that socialism is retarded and that the free market works. currently all the motives in the industry are misaligned and dont serve the soldier in the field.

this way there's no more overdue overprices broken projects, the soldiers gets the competition and efficiency of the free market.
