Do you need a rifled barrel for slugs?

No, but it helps.

Yeah

No, infact, standard slugs work better in a smooth bore.
You'll want a rifled barrel for sabot slugs.

this

It depends on the type of slug
There are 3 basic slug designs

>Standard slugs
Ok idiot what is your definition if a standard slug.

a standard slug is anything thats not in a sabot or novelty ammo
commonly sold as rifled slugs
the rifling on the slug does nothing it exists so the slug can compress through chokes. it imparts zero spin.

Smooth bore+rifled choke=smooth slug
Smooth bore+IC/mod choke=rifled slug
Rifled barrel=sabot slug

Ignorant

>work better
Theyre shit either way. I would argue a rifled bore does more for accuracy on a rifled slug than the actual intended lobbing effect.

Irony

You really don't what you're talking about

>the rifling on the slug does nothing it exists so the slug can compress through chokes. it imparts zero spin.
Completely false. Go look at taufledermaus channel, you'll see plenty of slow motion of spinning slugs coming out of smoothbores.

No.

Like user said: this.

Neither does this guy
Im going to buy some smooth slugs

A standard slug is a rifled slug intended to be fired from a smooth bore barrel, which will work in most chokes if not all.
A sabot slug is a sub caliber projectile intended to be shot from a rifled shotgun barrel.

Let me clear this up for the idiots in this thread.
I’m talking to these idiots
There are 3 main types of shotgun slugs
They are :
Foster Slugs
Brenneke Slugs
Sabot Slugs

Foster and Brenneke slugs can be shot out of any choke except the extra full or turkey chokes.
They can be shot from a rifled barrel, but probably wouldn’t be as accurate as a sabot slug

A sabot slug is normally used with a rifled barrel for greater accuracy

There is no such thing as a standard slug.

The small amount of spin it imparts doesnt stabilize the slug or aid accuracy. The rifling is mostly cosmetic

>There is no such thing as a standard slug.
its a generic term that applies to foster and brenneke
if you ask the idiot at walmart or other box chan that sells ammo for foster or brenneke you will get a blank look
if you say slug or standard slug then you get whatever foster or brenneke was closer to reach.

>autism
Everyone knows what he meant. Stop sperging.

Idiot Americans who think foster slugs are standard slugs.
Foster slugs were developed in America where they are very popular for little deer.
The rest of the world uses Brenneke slugs that were developed in Germany because they are superior against larger game animals.
I also suspect people in Alaska or Canada or places with bears, will have Brenneke slugs in their shotguns

>qtddtoa

L2 google then an hero

Yeah, because op couldve killed such quality threads as "the same AR/battle rifle/milsurp/AK/shtf/PSA/shitposting general we have every single day" with a legitimate firearm related question which is widely misunderstood throughout the gun community

Oh no!
The thread police are here.

No, but a shotgun with a rifled bore and the right kind of slugs can be a very precise pounder.

Based shotgun sharpshooter

No. Foster slugs, the ones with the "rifling" commonly found in the US, can group well at 50 yards from a smoothbore shotgun barrel using an IC choke (the best one for slugs). I'd trust it out to 100 yards, but not more than that. Shotguns with rifled barrels using saboted slugs are practically rifles and can be used as such.

There's a man in Texas who rebarreled his Saiga-12 to get a rifled bore, he uses it with slugs to obliterate oinks.

Deliciously brutal. the carnage must be spectacular. Fuck invasive oinks.

With the big and heavy lead projectile, it's almost like a musket, only self-loading and feeding from a detachable drum.
You could also pretty readily kill bears with a setup like that.
