What impact does a fully functional rail network have on warfare, either in Frontline or Second line service.
How useful are trains in warfare?
Ask Germans. They had better logistics and there were two places where Soviets were better because of railroads. Moscow which was the main railroad hub of the region and Stalingrad because they build a whole network in short time especially for that battle. The rest is history.
Ask the confederates.
Nazis were developing railway guns, that's as powerful as they get (provided you don't use them as bombs)
I don't know user...
Seems like...
Trains are kind of important
Very important logistically
Not very reliable for actual combat also very vulnerable to sabotage.
>Not very reliable for actual combat
This, but one can dream.

China has the best railway system in the world. Let that sink in.
Passenger rail, maybe, in certain routes.
Cargo rail? The US, hands-down. Shipping CONEX boxes across the country can be faster and cheaper than going through Panama, up to a certain volume.
Historically?
To move troops and resources from one place to another. Great for mobilization in total war conditions.

Or, to take over the whole of Russia:

Modern day? Not much outside of industrial deliveries. We have not had a war that would require the throughput necessary to justify combat use of trains in a while. Trucks are just fine.
US rail network is absolute garbage, american logistics rely on the highway system
40% of all freight is moved by rail in US. It's less than 5% in EU.
>Ask Germans. They had better logistics
The entire reason they lost the war was because the German Army's supply train was abysmal.
The army constantly ran away from trains because the Germans were autistic and had to replace all the Soviet gauge track with different sized German gauge track, and their non rail supplies was horse drawn cart
>t. ignorant liberal urbanite
US passenger rail is rare and poor. US freight rail is one of the best in the world. Educate yourself.
Could you have all those tanks manned and firing a broadside from a mile away? Imagine a gunline of tanks!
user please, I can only get so wet
Could you actually bend railroad tracks manually like that, with like 4 men?
For some Kino comic featuring armored trains, find Coroto Maltese in Siberia.
Completely vital, why is this even asked? They can move large amounts of supplies, vehicles, and personnel wherever the rails go. The only major issue is that they are easy targets for sabotage.
Germany had absolutely dogshit logistics, it was just able to be ignored until Barbarossa was launched.
Passenger rail is garbage, but freight rail is a completely different story.
