Funny you should mention the cancer example, one of my classmates in college was an Egyptian lady; lovely lady, great student, obviously cared about her family, and in our first year she actually spent a good chunk of time taking care of her ailing grandmother. After the old lady passed she said that her family refused to tell the grandmother about her own cancer diagnosis. There is actual academic debate in China, going on for decades, regarding the jewish influence on the Western world. The soldiers are largely unmotivated, NCOs are kept in line so officers could enjoy their warm spots. They don't share pretty much any knowledge more complex than basic boot camp stuff. As long as you are the only specialist, you are useful and needed. You give your peers some of that knowledge and you have zero leverage. This goes for pretty much all of the actual arab armies.
At least the jihadi groups have the motivation and the pressure to train new fighters.

To be fair we don't really have any recent experience with Turks in regular warfare - and small scale fighting with guerilla doesn't really say much. Turkish gear is fairly decent and morale seems pretty good. The biggest question is how Erdogan's purges of the top brass have affected them, if at all.

Do they? Last I checked the Iraqi Army consists of shias, who loathe the sunnis almost as much as they hate the kurds. They are largely US trained and US equipped and did well against the much weaker kurds during the kurd attempt at independence. If the sunnis, who ruled under Saddam and returned as ISIS, return under a new flag I doubt the shias will do any better than the last time though. But I am not sure I am ready to call the IA 'bad' right now.
