/msg/ - Military Surplus General

the sad existence of a sporter edition. to answer the user about the 1888 Gewehr, ive seen shitty ones for 300, so id say 400 is a good price

I have to confess that I find some old sporters, which were done with care and skill, to be very good looking rifles. I think they have a certain kind of cool of their own, there's some Americana about them.

The hatred of sporters is completely unfounded.
Savage, Remington, and Winchester all base their designs off sporterised military rifles.

Attached: 6.jpg (1728x2304, 410K)

I wouldn't mind as much if it wasnt the rarity of some of the rifles they fuck with. Like 91/30 Mosins, they'res fucking millions of them its fine.

Though that is different for taking an actual historic rifle and altering it irreversibly. The Model 30 never went to France.

Unfortunately it's usually the nice military rifles that make nice sporters.

My dad bought an 95% matching dot 43 K98k sporter for $275 a year and a half ago. The only thing they sporterized was the stock which they cut right before the barrel band and the front sight. He wants to restore it but the stock style is rather uncommon as it is a hardwood stock with a cupped buttplate. Is there a possibility of ever finding a stock like it for under $200?

Let me get my crystal ball.

So I'm looking at a listing for a Type 99. All matching, barrel looks chrome lined, mum shining proud, aircraft sights and monopod included. Rifle looks good but then I see this picture of the bore. Obviously there's some pitting going on but there also seems to be a pretty serious rust patch in there. What do guys think, is rifle kill?

Attached: Screenshot_20190804-001315_GunBroker.jpg (1080x1392, 540K)

don't mind the photoshopped corners, had to filter out my trash/ugly floor. Just got it about three weeks back. Replying with the parts guns/sporters I've owned

Attached: svt40.jpg (3712x721, 448K)

>Single .25 inch section of a single groove of rifling has some object on it possibly rust.

Yeah it's fucked dude, over him 12 dollars and say that's the lowest you can go. Nevermind the pronounced rifling, definitely hard soaked in rust, along with the rest of the gun powder residue in the barrel. IT HAS TO BE DEEP RUST PITTING IT WILL EXPLODE IF YOU LOOK AT IT WRONG!

Ignore top, just a break action I was selling in this lot.

And here's the whole current collection, minus my Webley MkVI and Type 14 Nambu

>14 Nambu
id be wary as shit to shoot that

You just have to keep your priorities straight. If it's something you REALLY wanted you'd have found a way.

How much did you pay for that?

Every Krag i've ever seen in a gun store is sporterized. why is this?

They've been on the surplus market for a century. Got really popular for having smooth actions.

Seeing sporterized surp makes me sad.

Picked this up today. (Not a fantastic picture, so sorry about that.)

It's a Chinese SKS, and I think it's a pretty early one to boot. All matching serials (letter followed by 4 digits), blade bayonet, cleaning rod, bore is in good condition and just needs a little cleaning. Stock seems aftermarket, but it's nice.

Does the early production add any appreciable degree of value? About how much is this worth, would you guys say?

Have a de-sporterized (re-militarized?) surp.

Looks like you're missing the buttplate.

I'm happy mine was easily fixed.

Reposting my Yugo capture K98k I got a couple days ago. I have a nugget and a Garand as well...thinking about getting a Lee-Enfield next.

Your eyes can deceive you; don't trust them.

I'm still a little disappointed that you didn't leave that decal on the stock.

The outline still remains.

Swedish clips most definitely not work in MAS 49s. They’ll work in MAS 36s, but they will not enter deep enough into the 49 to strip rounds into the magazine.

There goes my dream of a baguette SKS.

Attached: image.jpg (4032x3024, 2.73M)

Try 98 clips; they're narrower. It's probably meant to use US/NATO clips.

Frog clips aren't super cheap, but they're pretty readily available.

Unsporterized Krags are worth enough that selling them to a gun store would be too stupid even for fudds.

How do I inspect a SMLE before buying it?

Other than matching parts and no rust/pitting and nice bore etc.

I have heard how the barrel sits in stock is important. (Pushing on it in each direction it should move but return back to central position at muzzle)

But how important is this for buying one?

Should I autistically check every one I see at a gunshow?

Attached: EAkUzs6VAAEiRWm.jpg (1200x1200, 163K)

By SMLE I mean No4 rifles specifically sorry.

You should autistically check everything at every show. Even if you have no interest in buying it you should demand to be allowed to disassemble it.

No gew88

Join SMLE gang. They're way too much fun and have the best aesthetic.

Also look for anything marked "DP" especially if its the receiver, barrel, or bolt. It stands for Drill Purpose. A arsenal deemed it good for drill & ceremony and rifle drills but it is no longer certified for live fire. A barrel band or other small thing its not so bad, or the stock may have came from a DP rifle but the rest is fine. If the business parts are marked DP walk away.

Mmmm Mannlicher....

got a kar98k a couple days ago, 1936 jp sauer & sohn russian capture

Finally moving off campus so I can own more than pistols. Would an SKS for around 300$ be a decent starter rifle? Or is it overpriced now?

It's a great starter rifle and ammo is cheap. Loading it from the top is fun make sure it has a fixed mag not that gay tapco detachable mag duckbill trash

Glad to hear it’s still a good option. Was worried that ship had sailed. The cheap ammo is definitely a plus on a poor fag budget

an sks is a great rifle, a good first rifle, and for $300 a nice deal

Man Licker?

SKS isn't bad, one of the very few milsurp that are still useful in the modern day. If you can get one for $300 then go for it.

Attached: BUL - 1895-24.jpg (2560x1440, 1.17M)

The 300$ deal is def a plus. I’m glad to hear it is a good deal and I’m not overpaying

Should I or shouldnt? They also have a chilean contract but its in 9mm steyr, and idk wether to gear up to reload for another cartridge or spend a bit more and get this that shoots 9mm luger.

$300 is great for an SKS these days. I'd say go for it - the SKS is a nice idiot-proof rifle that's cheap to feed and fun to shoot.

Attached: 20180808_224901.jpg (4032x3024, 3.03M)

Which Mexican?

Attached: 20190615_151915_a.jpg (3759x2268, 2.19M)

Cavalry carbine.

1910 or 1924? I'm assuming 1910.

It's dated 1932, I don't know if they made 1910s later or not...

>Factory 416 converted to paratrooper
What factory? Markings? If have odd ones adds some value.

Attached: IMG_20190803_170136~2.jpg (2080x4160, 1.18M)

They didn't start making 1910s until the '20s. The M24 cavalry carbines all came from FN-Herstal.

Don't forget the non matching stock removes value.

>What factory?
/26\ (it looks like "25", but I presume it's 26)

>Markings?
Matching serials on receiver, bolt carrier, dust cover, trigger guard, and magazine (I haven't disassembled the rifle yet so I'm not sure if there are any other markings yet.) No markings on the stock (like I said, I'm fairly certain it's aftermarket). There are no Chinese characters (as far as I'm aware) on the rifle--the serial is a Latin character followed by 4 digits. There are what appear to be two proof marks on the barrel journal, but I'm unsure of what exactly they are.

Sino Soviet. Early production under Soviet supervision. Chinese didn't use laminate stocks that I'm aware of. Soviets did. But worth a Google.

I dunno! Unless you can tell me what to look for you'll have to wait until I get it and can post my own pics.

Go to your mum's panties bin and get pictures. We can use those to help with dates.

Thank you. I'll do some more research tomorrow (into the stock in particular). All in all, though, I'm pretty happy with the rifle and what I paid, so any extra provenance is just icing on the cake. The alternative I had intended to buy was most likely a Classic or Aim rifle.

>most likely a Classic or Aim rifle.
Those sound so unappealing and scrubbed of any of the wonders from the mass imported random shit from the 80s and 90s

Absolutely a 1910 then, good job. How much did you pay?

500

if ammos a problem then get the Luger

Found a k11 with a sporterized stock for $250 at a lgs. Everything besides the stock is in normal condition and is all matching. Should I get it?

Yeah get it and replace the stock with an original. If you can't find one online then search Gun Shows and Armslist and you'll find one eventually.

I got a Yugo Mauser 24/47, it's been shooting high as of late. Switched to this ammo and it's been doing good and I've been shooting good with it. Do you anons have other ammo that'd work good as well besides milsurp ammo? Again the regular Prvi 8mm Mauser tends to shoot high for me and I know why because it's not 8mm Mauser JS but a lawyer loaded version but this match grade Prvi works fine despite not being JS also though it is pretty pricey hence why I'm asking. I would do milsurp ammo but honestly I don't like shooting corrosive when I'm able to.

Attached: PRVI.jpg (640x480, 41K)

No.

Maybe

Is the cheapest way to get a decent, shooting condition M1 Garand by going through the CMP? $750 is by far the cheapest I have ever seen an M1 Garand. I've even seen M1s at gun shows labelled "CMP" and they are well over $1000, even if the condition is so-so.

Fuck no. Swiss stocks aren't too common online, and will probably run you another ~$250. You can find K11s that are matching in that price range
Yes. That's your best chance.

Boy oh boy, laddies. Looking at a mystery 7.62x54R rifle tonight for $300.00. My guess from the guy's description is that it's a Finn'd M91.

Sweaty Benis has Yugo Mausers in stock.

If he sells you M24/47 ser# 5055 don't accept it, the barrel is crooked.

Gonna be picking up an SMLE No. 4 Mk. 1* Sunday, the wood is pretty beaten up though so how would/could/should I go about returning it to its former glory?
Something tells me the answer is "don't", which is fine by me, just jealous of those with nice furniture on theirs.

Don't is the correct answer, unless it's packing grease or other nastiness, then sweat it out.

In the broad sense, the answer is, do not - because more than likely anything you do will diminish from its collector value.

That being said, you can clean the seventy years of grime and grease and shit off it - I use linseed on SMLEs/No.1s, I'd suggest someone else offer up if that's still appropriate for No4s. You're only removing the stuff that's between you and the finish, not the finish itself.

>just jealous of those
The best wisdom I've been offered on milsurp is:
>the best time to buy [whatever] rifle is always now, because next time it will cost you more
>don't pass up the rifle you want in the condition you don't - assuming safe and shootable. buy it now and you can always sell it to fund the "perfect" example later.

Altering a surplus gun is historical. Using an old Krag or something to survive the great depression is just as historical as carrying it for 3 months to fight for 30 minutes.

Undoubtedly true. But the market/interest in "rifles modified by their owners to be easier to carry in deer country so they didn't starve" is somewhat less than "produced in years that would indicate likelihood of military service in War X/Y/Z"

A T99 long toyo kogyo 35th series arrived at my door today. My first C&R purchase, my firsk Arisaka, and second Japanese firearm
Renaissance waxed everything but the bolt and inside the receiver and CLP'd the bolt and internals on receiver and ran a bore snake through it. It is really calming to disassemble a new firearm/action and see what's going on. Unfortunately I didn't have time to remove the furniture and fully disassemble everything.
I ordered some 174gr FMJ 7.7x58 and am going to the range this weekend. I am a happy man

Attached: DSC_0260.jpg (1620x1080, 373K)

It's an assembly gun with three incredibly light strikes to the mum which this picture doesn't show well. Low energy defacement

Attached: DSC_0270.jpg (1620x1080, 412K)

there's a modicum of straw coloring remaining on trigger, extractor, and AA sights

Attached: DSC_0268.jpg (1620x1080, 528K)

If that were true then there would be fewer modified surplus guns. Larpers are more willing to waste money than working people who need a ranch gun to kill coyotes with.

she's lovely. my Murata has a little sister now

Attached: DSC_0265.jpg (1620x1080, 392K)

If people today are acquiring sporters or chopping non-fucked surp to kill coyotes on the ranch, instead of buying any of a plethora of cheap, reliable, new 1MOA bolt actions, they're fucking morons.

b8/10

There are features on a milsurp that are preferable to something like a Savage Axis. Iron sights for instance.
