Some of these divisions fought hard but were near obliterated, then were raised nearly from scratch again with soldiers of lesser quality and far less powerful armor and arty - and all of that in smaller quantities. The same division in 1942 and in 1944 might have only the name and number in common.

Also not all the SS units were volunteers. A significant proportion were regular conscripts, while some were downright pressganged into service. Like the US Marines at the time, the chief advantage of the SS over the regular army was the much shorter and more intense training period.

Yeah, the FFL is shaped by whatever's going on in the world right now and takes their songs with them. After WW2 a lot of SS personnel fled into the legion and adopted different names, just like a lot of Whites right after the Russian civil war. I wouldn't be surprised if a lot of Ukrainians fled into the FFL recently.

Should be added that there always was a lot of Germans in the FFL. Something like a third of the FFL were Germans in 1940, which obviously became an issue.

France lost the war in 1941, both the Free France and Vichy France were nothing more than puppet governments, one just managed to build legitimacy after the war.

The FFL is based on teaming up French officers with foreigners looking for French citizenship. The Spanish Foreign Legion, last I looked, is foreign only in that it copies the FFL in organization - actual foreign volunteers are not allowed.

I was speaking in overall terms because of the national socialist policy of total war/genocide, hence my point that the red army given it's size and amount of men filled with anger was probably unlike anything that was seen on earth before.
