I think around 21 I started to realize that guns are an inseparable part of America and her history. Honestly I agree I understand perfectly why I like guns but the motives of others unnerve me. They never have the same respect or discipline for guns they horde them and treat them in an almost fetishistic way. They buy them in preparation for violence instead of self defense. It reminds me of those young adults that find one thing like kayaking or biking and obsess, and obsess over it to the point that their personal identity is entwined with ownership of an object.

However, living in Japan i didn't feel the need to absolutely have a gun (though i always had the nagging g feeling that it would be nice to have one).

There is a strange detachment from reality that I notice in many people who work in tech. I don't know what it is, but they live in this bubble where they belive everthing is utopia, but when the wifi is down they loose all common sense and run around like chimps. Out of all of the people who should understand there is a thin venere on civilization, they refuse to see it. Hence somebody is unable to understand why others would own a firearm. But a fridge that can text me? Perfectly normal.
