Good books on first hand accounts?

Hello, I'm looking ford books on firsthand accounts of experiences in war, if you have any favorites feel free to share.

It can be any conflict/side it doesn't matter too much, but if anyone knows any with accounts from the Rhodesian Bush War or maybe the Soviet-Afghan War that'd be appreciated since those two peak my interests currently.

Some of my own favorite recs are
(Pictured) Sgt. Dan Mills - Sniper One The Blistering True Story of a British Battle Group Under Siege
Antony Beevor - Stalingrad
George Orwell - Homage to Catalonia
Adam Hochschild - Spain in Our Hearts

Shameless self bump.

Oh man Sniper One was the shit, I fucking loved that book, was my first proper military read and it got me hooked.

Its rare I see it mentioned anywhere, thanks for the memory, I might read it again.

Have you read Bravo Two Zero and the two other books surrounding it? (The One That Got Away, Soldier Five – The Real Truth About the Bravo Two Zero Mission) They contradict on certain points but overall tell a brutal story.

Yep people should talk about books more often on here, Sniper One was a hell of a read. Alright I'll give those a look thanks.

Truth, cant beat a good read, especially when your stuck in the middle of nowhere on post with no phone.

The Things They Carried by O’Brien is really good. Not so much about the combat itself, but the whole emotional turmoil of being thrust into Vietnam. It does a good job of capturing how people dealt with the sheer horror of their circumstances.

I'll tell you what’s alongside Sniper One on my bookshelf;

Dead Men Risen - Toby Harnden. (Pictured) Covers the Welsh Guards battlegroup during Op Herrick X (2009). With this can also be read Death of A Soldier by Margaret Evision, covers the aftermath of the death of Lt. Mark Evision during Herrick X, and extracts from his diary which give an account of the challenges faced by a young officer. (The dairy is worth a read on its own, I think it was serialised by the guardian or the times and is used as a teaching resource at RMAS)

We Were Warriors - Johnny Mercer. Memoir of a RA joint fires commander through 3 tours of Afghan. Pretty good read, fairly interesting. He's now the new UK Veterans Minister, and the book covers him campaigning to become an MP.

Under the Bearskin - Mark Evans. Good read. Covers a Coldstream Guards officer during a tour of Afghan, and his fight with PTSD afterwards. His battle with PTSD makes the starkest reading.

Also
Company commander - Russell Lewis MC
Diary of a company commander during Herrick VIII (2008). It's been ages since I read. It as I recall was a very enjoyable read chronicling the ups and downs of command faced by most officers, as well as some of the specific challenges faced by a company commander (compared to platoon command, which most afghan books deal with)

I've also just finished re-reading The Junior Officers Reading Club - Patrick Hennessey, which we were told to read before ASOB and again before RMAS. It’s a memoir that covers RMAS, Iraq and Afghan. I love it, I find he writes contacts in an enjoyable and fluid way, although I have seen some reviews that hate his style, so maybe it’s not for everyone.

I'm currently enjoying Beevor's Arnhem. So if you liked Stalingrad, maybe try that.

Next on my list is Fighting the People's War - Jonathan Fennell. I got the chance to hear him give a guest lecture that was fascinating, I think he is the first historian to examine the censor reports to inform his analysis of WW2 and from the taste I got at the lecture it should be an interesting read.

Bump

>Junior Officers Reading Club is brilliant. Really well-written - which makes a nice change from a lot of military accounts which can sound like a guy regaling you at the pub.

Accidental greentext... just put me in my coffin now

I hear that.

I actually remember reading a segment of that in a compilation of book segments for some reading class, I'll give that a look thanks.

Cheers, these all sound great.
This should keep me nicely occupied for some time,

Badass, cheers.

Looking for good books on the Bosnia War, so far the only thing I've read on it is:
"My War Gone By, I Miss it So."
anybody have any other recommendations?
