What's Jow Forumss opinon on the Chinese SKS?

Not worth the money they go for now. Unless you’re in Canada

kind of gay, but nicer than their awful AKs

They are great rifles. Not worth what they cost from a practical defensive rifle standpoint (you can get an entry level AR for less). Dead reliable, neat aesthetics, old styling, stout cartridge for hunting...
Nothing really bad to say about them other than they are a bit outdated. If you get one and get stripper clips, I advise taking some steel wool and polishing the clips. It makes loading it 20x easier. Better than the Garand desu.

Piston spring flew out and broke my TV so I threw it at a tree in anger
Shoots fine trigger sucks compared to my Yugo

>no flaxseed oil/linseed applied to that dry stock

very shameful.

based and chinkpilled

Lots of fun to shoot, not horribly practical unless you live in a ban state, but still a fun gun

Can I just run olive oil over all my guns?

Classic Jow Forumsommando gun. Currently over priced in today's market, but still great guns.

Newfag to Jow Forums here, are SKS's in general a good buy or should I go with an AR or AK? I want to get a rifle but am unsure what I should get and I don't have a shit load of money to spend.

Get whatever you want, but for the current cost of an SKS you can save a little more and get entry level AR15s.

If you think you'll enjoy an SKS more, take that money you'd have spent on the AR15 and buy ammo.

Garand
>big, weird balance
>requires clips to function
>fuddy ought six
>great sights
>ammo sensitive without aftermarket parts
>exposed op rod kek
SKS
>Svelt, balances well
>comfy to shoot
>low recoil 7.62x39, can still kill anything you need to
>clips or not, it just werks
>robust action can handle any ammo with no issues
>folding bayonet for stabbing capitalists

go to hell elmer

I'd reccomend a PSA ar15 for your first rifle. Cheap and they have a great warranty if anything goes wrong, but it probably wont. If you catch parts on sale and are willing to put in 45 minutes worth of time putting together a lower parts kit, one can be had for less than the going rate of SKS' easily.

Do the chinese ones have a chrome lined barrel?

Cool, but not nearly as cool as my Chinese AK.

Get ar or AK first. Sks is good if you travel to ban states often and tote a gun

Yep

Honestly I'd start with an AR because of all the parts and knowledge available for them.

Just save more money and pick one up. Tons of stuff can be done to them down the road later.

>just get an AR bro
but ironically

This
ARs are objectively the best choice in America because of their proliferation.

>AR
They're the new 91/30 that can be bought for less than a 91/30 these days.

They're fine rifles. Some people are asshurt because they used to be $89 at gun shows back in the day, and they're economically ignorant dipshits who don't understand that things don't stay the same price they were in the Good Old Days™forever. For a reliable semiauto rifle, they're still reasonably priced. Now, should you buy one? That depends. If you like it for its history, sure. If you just want a cheap blaster, no - not unless you live in a ban state or Banada. If you're in a free state, just get an entry-level AR. That said, if you *do* live in a ban state, the SKS is still a perfectly viable option - although these days a Ruger PC Carbine is another ban state option that averages around the same price and has just about the same list of advantages (accurate, reliable, shoots a cheap, commonly-available, soft-shooting cartridge) while also being brand-new and backed by a world-class warranty.

If you get one, get it for the right reasons.

OP here
I like the wood and long ass bayonet, I know they are tactility stupid but my plan is to just run away in case of boogaloo.
Literally choosing sexy over practicality here.

>long ass bayonet
Don't get a paratrooper then. I got one on accident. Stubby ass bayonet.

Alright, your choice. Again, nothing wrong with the SKS besides it being outdated. Still a semi auto reliable gun in a good caliber.

Are Mini-14s still legal in the anti-fun states?

You could always go full A-Team and get one of those lol

Yugo and earlier russian/shinese SKS get extra points in ban states because they're not detachable box magazine fed so they don't get touched by "Assault weapon" bullshit, despite having many scary salt features.

the PC carbine will get hit by banners sooner or later but the OG SKS design will probably stay under the radar for as long as semi autos survive.

Also if you're talking ban state rifles and have money don't get a PC carbine get a featureless Mini-14 ranch rifle, even NY doesn't register those as long as they we're manufactured with a 10 round mag.

Yes, but the Mini-14...bleh. A lot of the reputation for shitty accuracy comes as much from the dog-shit rear sight (which should be replaced immediately with a tech sight) as much as the pencil thin whippy barrel.

This; I don't think most anti-gunners know what loading actual clips means.

It won't be long before they try to start banning all semi-autos with detachable mags, regardless of features. I think the only reason why they haven't been able to ban semi-autos period, would be that taking away Garands from WW2 and Korean veterans would be really bad optics and probably cause a few to go full Clint Eastwood on the police.

fucking insane paying 400$ for an sks

yeah I remember those complaints from back in the day, I'm just surprised they haven't addressed them by now

Stop tempting me i swore i wouldnt buy anymore guns till i get a stable job

It's definitely a pretty bad deal compared to when they were $150 and sub $100 on sale back in the 90s, but I still think they're great if you compare them to other collectible military self-loaders (Garand, SVT-40, FN-49, Gewehr 43, Rashid Carbine, VZ-52) rather than a WASR or a PSA AR.

>Yugo and earlier russian/shinese SKS get extra points in ban states because they're not detachable box magazine fed so they don't get touched by "Assault weapon" bullshit, despite having many scary salt features.
Yugos are banned in California because grenade launcher. Chinese and Russians are okay.
>the PC carbine will get hit by banners sooner or later
Not unless there's a couple of bigtime mass shootings with them, which I doubt there will be.
> don't get a PC carbine get a featureless Mini-14 ranch rifle,
I have both, and love them both, but unless you *really* need to sling 5.56, go with the PC Carbine. If nothing else, it can reliably be found $200-300 cheaper than the Mini.
>Yes, but the Mini-14...bleh.
The Mini is a fine rifle, and I actually like it more than the AR. I put the Tech Sight on mine, but put a red dot on it too, so that's not an issue. I also have a Mini manufactured within the past 15 years, so I have the new thicker barrel. It's plenty accurate for its class of rifle, and totally reliable.

I just can’t get over how insane the price of a mini 14 or mini 30 is in Canada

>fucking insane paying 400$ for an sks
Okay grampa. Tell us again about how two features, a Bugs Bunny cartoon, and a newsreel were .25 cents back in the day, too.

Based Ivan

A few years ago they were half the price, like the $100 nuggets.
Import bans messed with the supply but the demand stayed the same.

The AR. An sks is fine but the AR is usually nicer for the same price and a decent AK will run you $1000 these days

>

They're inferior to either for literally any job beyond looking nice. They're outdated and there's no getting around it.

They've gone up even in Canada, where there is no import ban. Milsurp just isn't cheap anymore.

I just picked up a new looking chink SKS, for 115 USD because it was missing the bayonet.
Feels good to be a leaf.
What should I do with it? I’m thinking tech sights and shortening the barrel 1.5 inch and use it as a really cheap mini 30.

>shortening the barrel 1.5 inch
All fucking bubbas must fucking hang.

It’s a civilian model
