You can't possibly protect yourself from being shut out of everything that will be banned because everything will be banned eventually. Panic buy the things you've always wanted to get but for some reason haven't yet. If an AR never really appealed to you, make that a second priority (but do plan to get one eventually). Consider every semi auto rifle and every magazine over 10 rounds under threat.

I recently bought a couple more lowers and a bunch more 30 rounders, already have 1 AR built.
Probably not gonna build another AR until next year, but parts kits will be around for a while.
Just looking to buy a few more lowers, a couple thousand rounds of 5.56/9mm/22 and keep an eye out for deals on mags. PSA has gen2 pmags for $7.99, and occasionally run their d&h mags for $6.99 each.
Once I sink another +/-$500 into lowers mags and ammo I'll start looking at a pistol or rifle kit.
Currently stacking amazon rewards from credit card to buy a scope for my AR.

At least go buy a lower. I would also get a PSA kit though. They aren't the best but they are reliable from what I've seen and they are accurate.
