not entirely sure, but i think the metal spaced with air gaps is a more modern form of spaced armor

by using many metal plates with small airgaps, rather than a single pair with a large air gap, a HEAT round will be forced to change direction more times and lose more overall power and strike at a more shallow angle reducing the power of its metal jet more than simply increasing the standoff distance
