As someone who has never used/held a gun, what would be a good gun for home defense?

For the past year ive had a bowie knife and a Big stick for protection. havent really needed it, until a week ago i went to the kitchen to get a drink at 4 am and the back door was open.

Go to a shooting range and try out a shitload of handguns. Most charge a flat rate to rent as many handguns as you like and you only have to buy ammo from them. Full size 9mm are pretty easy to shoot and have been proven to work pretty well on people. Plus it doesn’t go through a bazillion walls and kill people 2 miles away.

Dont,take training classes and find a handgun that fits good in ur hand and you can shoot well. Then get some kind of rifle or shotgun

it'd be an interesting first rifle but probably not what you're looking for.
ar15 or a handgun of your choice would probably be ideal.
for handguns it's hard to say what to go for, but i'd recommend a modern doublestack. you'll want to hold the various popular models to see what you like best as far as how it feels in your hands.

If you've never used/held one before, the most important thing you can get before the gun itself is knowledge. Go to your local gunstore, finger-fuck a few and get a feel for how they fit in your hand. Ask questions. Maybe even attend a gun defense class in your area.
The best gun for home defense is the gun you feel most comfortable using.
Buy a glock and learn to use it. Rifles are better. But kiss your hearing goodbye you ever light it off indoors.

kickback is a nonissue on anything you'd be getting for a first gun.
strength has nothing to do with recoil, anyway, it's just proper technique. though the g3 is a heavy rifle by today's standards at 9lbs empty.

Do you have valuables in view of your back door? Maybe thousands of dollars in electronics or sporting goods or hobby parts? AR 15, psa complete lower & complere upper + bolt group + charging handle if you are comfortable with an FFL transfer, m&p sport II if not, assuming that if or when someone comes back it'll be in force with 3 or more niggas. But if you don't have those things in view I suggest putting together a budget and heading to your local gun shop and finger fucking some handguns in that budget range and be honest with the clerk about it being your first and a home defense gun. Anything over 380 will work, I like 9mm, some like 40s&w, boomers like 45, none are bad. Rent the top 3 or 4 that felt the best in your hand at a range and buy the one that you can shoot comfortably. Don't forget to watch videos on shooting form if you go the handgun route.
For most pistol calibers, it's a barely-noticable jolt back, and a bit up. As long as your fingers aren't in the way of the slide, you'll be fine. Full size rifles push back just a little more, but still, it's light.
Training to wield the gun properly first will naturally train you to handle recoil better. Don't worry unless it's something like a 12 gauge.
if you want a gun but don't want to train, then you should just get an airsoft gun and say it's real.
there's no point in owning a gun and only using it when you need it. you'll probably limpwrist it and have no clue what to do when it stovepipes and then get yourself killed or in the very least scare them off and feel like an absolute idiot

Train anyway. If you're completely new at this you need someone to show you the ropes. And for the sake of all that is fuck go to the range every now and then and make sure you practice. A gun's not worth much if you don't remember how to use it.
not really no. We live in an apartment complex, and usually keep all the blinds closed.
Problem is the back door doesn't lock. Its a sliding door, and we just use a stick in the railing to keep it closed. It works pretty good, but when i hear a sound downstairs my testicles retract and i go check every closet like im ready to die.

Unless you know what to look for, I'd go to a dedicated gunshop. Their guns are more likely to be in excellent condition out of the box.

Replacing that door should be your first priority, then I'd think about a handgun or maybe two as I take it your apartment is a little on the bigger size. I'll also add that you should lurk for defense gif&webm threads. Most people hate them because of the reposts but they'll give you an idea of how situations play out, the distances involved, the numbers of people usually involved and number of shots likely to be fired.

A .38 Special or .357 revolver would work for quick situations. Otherwise get a reasonably-priced 12 gauge shotgun. Just the sound of one will deter most trespassers, unless they're dumb enough to be proven otherwise.

Short barreled break action/pump action shotgun. The easiest, simplest, and cheapest weapon for basic home defense. The cycling of a shotgun scares anyone. A break action forces you to identify your target before destroying it, but a pump action would be the best deal.
Don't forget to attach a high intensity tac-light onto the gun since i'm assuming you're in a suburban-like area, they're gonna hit you at night time. They always do.

Only shotguns and huge caliber rifles kick so bad that it's painful. And huge caliber rifles usually have big recoil compensators to ease this. Pretty much only shotguns with slugs kick with enough recoil to be called "painful"
Basically any cheap gun will be fine, just avoid any that fire a powerful round or require a lot of maintenance and know-how if you're untrained. Even then, lots of guys like me started with a Mosin, which is basically a 100 year old cannon that you can ruin if you forget to clean it and most of us do okay so pretty much just go for cheap.
