Yes in Russian "Spetsnaz" is just their term for special forces, really anyone's special forces. When I was in Russia doing study abroad they talked on the news about "American Spetsnaz" getting in a helicopter crash in Afghanistan. It's a catch all term for anything from Rangers to Delta.

"Spetsnaz" basically means "Special Purpose Forces", basically Russia's equivalent of "Special Forces", so it could really mean anything.

Russia's top units have always been "Alpha" and "Senezh". The KGB had "Alpha" as an antiterror force and "Vympel" as an unlisted secretive unit that could carry assassinations in any nation, after the collapse of the Soviet Union, Vympel became a glorified police force and now they're just a secondary unit to FSB Alpha with a different role, their main duty is to guard critical Russian government infrastructure such as nuclear power plants and nuclear warheads facilities.

"Senezh" was founded in 1953 and is considered Russia's very first "spetsnaz" unit, it was designed to assault and ambush enemy forces behind enemy lines, but their main mission was to raid Pershing nuclear missile launch sites in Europe, it belonged to the Spetsnaz GRU command and was unlisted in every document or described as "listening post", in 2008 during the reforms done by Serdyukov they created the KSSO which basically a SOCOM equivalent and used "Senezh" as the model unit of SSO, so Senezh became the main unit of SSO. Of course Senezh came a long way from their ambusher days, they're still an assault and special reconnaissance forces, their training is designed to rival anything the Western SOF have but in their own way, their physical training is done by Olympics physical conditioning coaches for example, but SSO has three main training school: Senezh (All-weather all-terrain warfare, countersniping, Special reconnaissance), Kuba (Urban warfare, counterterror, hostage rescue) and 561 ASC (Maritime warfare, amphibious operations, coastal reconnaissance).
"Kuba" or Kubinka-2 is entirely new but it was formed from FSB Alpha officers. 561 ASC also entirely new but formed from Naval GRU officers.
All three have been in North-Caucasus and Syria and their performance has been nothing short of outstanding.
